Magnetic Video UK Warning (1978)

Warning: On a red background, we see white warning text like this:

THE COPYRIGHT PROPRIETOR HAS LICENSED THIS
FILM FOR PRIVATE HOME USE ONLY AND ANY
OTHER USE INCLUDING MAKING COPIES OF THE
FILM, CAUSING IT TO BE SEEN OR HEARD IN
PUBLIC OR BROADCASTING IT OR CAUSING IT
TO BE TRANSMITTED TO SUBSCRIBERS TO A
DIFFUSION SERVICE OR SELLING, LETTING ON
HIRE OR OTHERWISE DEALING WITH IT IN
WHOLE OR IN PART, IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Rare. Only found on early Magnetic Video pre-cert releases, like 100 Rifles.

1980–1982[]

Magnetic Video UK Warning (1980)

Warning: On a black background, we see warning text that goes like this:

Magnetic Video

The copyright proprietor has licensed
this film for private home use only
and any other use including making
copies of the film, causing it to be
seen or heard in public or broadcasting
it, or causing it to be transmitted to
subscribers to a diffusion service or
service, letting on hire or otherwise
dealing with it in whole or in part
is strictly prohibited.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: It can be found on the Magnetic Video pre-cert release of Alien.

1982–1993[]

Warning: On a black background, we see the following warning text in a white Helvetica font:

The copyright proprietor has
licensed the picture contained
in this videocassette for private
home use only and prohibits
any other use, copying,
reproduction or performance
in public, in whole or in part.

Variant: Laserdiscs had the words "contained in this videocassette" replaced with "recorded on this video disc."

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: A stoic man (which is also the same man that provides the 20th Century Fox Video UK voiceover) reads the warning text out loud. Sometimes, it is silent.

Availability: Extremely rare. It can be seen at the end of 20th Century Fox Video UK pre-certs, such as The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, The Desert Fox, Star Wars, The Janitor (known as Eyewitness in the US/Canada), and Chariots of Fire. Also on most tapes from other independent home video companies, whose releases were distributed by (CBS/)Fox, such as Entertainment in Prime Time, Minstrel Entertainments, Nickelodeon Pictures, Avatar Communications, Odyssey Video, Psycho Video, Curzon Video and (only at the end of) VCL/Merlin Video. Alternatively, it is also seen on releases by Carlton Video, New Age Entertainment, Manga Video, and, most notably, High Fliers Video Distribution. The Laserdisc variant appeared on the original CBS/Fox Video UK Laserdisc of Star Wars.

Editor's Note: Even though this warning screen was dropped by 20th Century Fox Video by the start of 1983, several of the aforementioned home video companies, their releases distributed by CBS/Fox Video, would continue to use this as their warning screen.

Autumn 1983–1984[]

CBS FOX Warning 1982

Warning: On a black background, the name of the film or TV series/episode title (which varies based on the tape) types in. Afterwards the warning text types in like this:

The copyright proprietor has licensed the
picture contained in this videocassette
for private home use only and prohibits
any other use, copying, reproduction or
performance in public in whole or in part.
---
This product is manufactured,
distributed and marketed solely by
CBS/FOX VIDEO LIMITED.

Everything is blue with a white outline.

Variant: At the end of tapes, the completed warning screen just fades in and out.

FX/SFX: The warning text typing in.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Extremely rare. Seen on old pre-cert VHS releases, like Table for Five and Judas Priest Live. It also appears on very early pre-cert VHS releases from Odyssey Video, such as The Red Baron, and later Minstrel Entertainments releases, such as She's in the Army Now!

1984[]

Warning: On a black background, we see the name of the film or TV series/episode title (which varies based on the tape) typing in in black with a white outline. Then a red line appears, and we see a teal warning text, which appears to be in a longer script than before reading:

The copyright proprietor has licensed
this picture and all other material
featured in this videocassette for
private home use only and prohibits
any other use, copying, reproduction
or performance in public in whole
or in part.

Then it fades out to make room for the next screen:

This product is manufactured,
distributed and marketed solely by
CBS/FOX VIDEO LIMITED

Closing Variant: At the end of the film, the completed first warning screen simply fades in and out.

FX/SFX: Same as before, only for the opening variant.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: This was also very short-lived. Seen on the UK VHS releases of The Empire Strikes Back, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Porky's II: The Next Day.

December 1984–2006[]

Warning: We see the Warning text scrolling up. On a black background, like the previous warning, the name of the film or TV program/episode title appearing on the tape appears in yellow. Below it is teal warning text reading:

THE COPYRIGHT PROPRIETOR HAS LICENSED
THIS PICTURE AND ALSO OTHER MATERIAL
FEATURED IN THIS VIDEO-CASSETTE FOR
PRIVATE HOME USE ONLY AND PROHIBITS
ANY OTHER USE, COPYING, REPRODUCTION
OR PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC, IN WHOLE OR
IN PART.

Variants:

  • This notice at the bottom of the text was changed various times: "THIS PRODUCT IS MANUFACTURED, DISTRIBUTED AND MARKETED SOLELY BY..."
    • 1984–1991: "...CBS/FOX Video Limited." (here, the text isn't entirely capitalised)
    • 1991–1995: "...FOX VIDEO LIMITED."
    • 1994–1997: "...FOX GUILD HOME ENTERTAINMENT LIMITED."
    • 1995–2006: "...TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT LIMITED."
    • 1997–2003: "...FOX PATHÉ HOME ENTERTAINMENT LIMITED."
  • In the CBS/FOX era, the title faded in and remained at the top (sometimes very top) throughout the warning. On earlier titles, the warning scroll was in a bluer font, and scrolled up at a choppier rate; in this version of the bumper, "PROPRIETOR" is misspelled as "PROPRIETER".
  • The font varies. From 1984 to 1994, the font was in Helvetica. From 1992 to 2001, the font was in Futura. From 1998 to 2005 a condensed Futura-ish font was used. Sometimes two fonts are used at once (the title using one and the scroll using another).
  • Some releases of black and white material have the entire warning text in white.
  • In some cases, the title isn't in italics.
  • In some rare cases (such as the VHSs of The Simpsons Against the World and Anastasia), no italics are used.
  • MGM Home Entertainment releases from 1999-2005 used this warning, though the manufacturing notice at the bottom is omitted.
  • On releases from Summer-Autumn and December of 2005-2006, the title and warning text, which are now darker in colour, are in a different font and less condensed.
  • Releases throughout the majority of Autumn 2005 have massively oversized title text, in an Arial font (which is also used for the warning scroll).

FX/SFX: The warning text scrolling.

Music/Sounds: Almost all the time, none.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Home Alone and the 1991 reissue of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the screen is pasted over the black screen at the end of the film, with the end music still playing.
  • On Subway, the start of the trailer for Bad Medicine plays over the very end of the screen.

Availability: By far, more common than any of the previous warning screens. It is found on practically every 20th Century Fox VHS release in the UK at both the start and the end, and later appeared on MGM Home Entertainment and Pathé VHS releases as well. Use the film titles as shown in the above pictures as some examples of where you can find it.

Editor's Note: On rare occasions, the titles would suffer from typos. On the British VHS issue of Myra Breckinridge, the title appears as Myra Breckenridge at the start of the tape, whereas the end of the tape instead reads Myra Breckenbridge. Releases of the first The Simpsons Collection VHSs also suffered incorrect phrasings of the episodes. One such example is instead of "Life on the Fast Lane", the episode's working title, "Bjorn to be Wild", was used at the end of the tape, despite the actual title appearing at the start. Also see the Aliens: Special Edition image above.

1999–2010[]

Warning: On a black background, we see white warning text in Helvetica, with "UK & IRELAND" in red above it.

Variants:

  • Starting in 2005, "UK & IRELAND" is replaced with "WARNING".
  • On 20th Century Fox releases, the company name is listed as "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Inc."
  • On MGM releases from 2000-01, the company name is "MGM Home Entertainment (Europe) Ltd.", but from 2006-10, the company name is "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc."
  • On Blu-rays from 2006-10, the text is rearranged, and "WARNING" is replaced with "ENGLISH"'.
  • On the UK DVD of Digimon: The Movie, the fonts are different, the text is center-aligned, "UK" is expanded to "UNITED KINGDOM," "Warning" is in all-caps, and there is an extra gap before "Sales and/or rental rights for this DVD are specified on the original packaging of this DVD."

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Seen on 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment DVDs.

  • Originally, it appeared at the start of DVDs, but starting in 2004, it was moved to the end.
  • Pathé DVDs do not feature this warning, instead just using their own warning screen.
  • From 2009-10, it was used in tandem with the 2009 warning, with one of its last appearances being on the 2010 UK DVD of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

Editor's Note: When this warning screen retired, the 2009 warning screen took its place at the end of releases, while the FACT penalties warnings remained at the start until the 2013 warning screen debuted. Also like the HBO Video warnings, it says "editing."

2012-2020[]

TCFHE-2013-Warning-Screen-UK

Warning: On a black background, we see this text in white:

Music/Sounds: None.

FX/SFX: The text scrolling.

Music/Sounds: Relaxing bright elevator music plays in the background. An announcer reads the text out loud, except for "(RESOLUTION ADOPTED AT INTERPOL GENERAL ASSEMBLY, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, SEPTEMBER 8, 1977)".

Availability: Found on Magnetic Video, 20th Century Fox-Video, and early CBS/Fox Video releases in Australia. On Magnetic titles, it appeared at the end rather than the beginning.
