Sneak Peeks menu

Nickname: "Filmreel"

Visuals:

  • There are one of the following clip-on texts - some of which slides down while the other section of text slides to the right, respectively, before settling. There is a pink rectangular strip on the top (moving towards the bottom of the screen), a gold rectangular strip at the top moving to the right, a transparent strip moving to the left (forming into a backing for the top clip-on text), golden lines moving in from every side and a gold rectangular strip that forms from the right going toward the left side of the screen (the bottom clip-on text will usually end up in this strip). Film reels are slowly spinning in the blue-tinted background.
  • When hitting "Sneak Peeks" on the main menu on most 2004-10 DVDs, the phrase "Sneak Peeks" zooms slowly down the top of the screen and stays put. Four gold arrows slide in from all four directions of the screen, after which the words "PLAY ALL" (on the top right side of the screen), "MAIN MENU" (at the bottom right side) and "MORE" (at the bottom left side) fade in. Then, several logos for movies/TV shows/TV networks animate in several unique ways and appear in the middle of the screen in all sides. Then, a blue filmreel with gold holes appears next to either one of the logos or "PLAY ALL", and the viewer can use their remote control to move the filmreel to a movie logo, which by clicking on them takes them to the trailer they want to see, or to "PLAY ALL" (which plays all the trailers, either on the disc or on the page), "MAIN MENU" (which jumps right back to the main menu), "MORE" (which jumps to an additional page of trailers), and "BACK" (which can only be accessed from the second page, and jumps back to the first page). When the viewer selects a trailer they want, the small filmreel inverts and the menu cuts to black, then the start of the trailer.

Trivia:

  • Early DVD releases from Disney and its subsidiaries had no previews or when had previews did not allow viewers to skip the previews. Because of subsequent backlash, the ability to jump directly to the main menu at any time was added. In August 2000, text regarding such an option was added to the first clip-on on the disc (more on that below), although the 2001-04 DVDs of Just Visiting, The Love Bug, and My Baby's Daddy, which use only one clip-on, feature no additional text. This ability was also provided by Disney's Fast Play, which was introduced in 2004, except on discs with it, there were no bumpers in-between trailers until 2010.
  • Some 2000 DVDs, such as The Sixth Sense, Mumford, Twin Warriors, and Mission to Mars, featured the same previews as on the disc's opening accessible from the main menu, except the option is entitled "Preview Trailer(s)" and the previews, complete with the original IDs, run automatically (a practice that, except for a "More Sneak Peeks" option in the "Sneak Peeks" menu on the original release of Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure, was later abandoned, only for it to be revived in 2010). Starting with Keeping the Faith, it was officially changed to "Sneak Peeks," although the trailer option was titled "Sneak Peeks" on the earlier-released Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins.
  • Some DVDs, such as Shanghai Noon and Knights, High Fidelity, Newsies, Bringing Down the House, The Recruit, Sling Blade: Exclusive Director's Cut, and Prozac Nation, feature previews before the main menu, but don't offer a "Sneak Peeks" option.
  • Following the Sneak Peeks menu variant's retirement, the menu was reverted back to its 2000-04 design. Discs with this include Everybody's Fine, When in Rome, and the 2010 reissues of the first two Toy Story films. Starting with Alice in Wonderland, the previews play automatically for the first time since 2000 whenever "Sneak Peeks" is pressed, a practice that would last until 2021.
  • On the 2004 DVD of Home on the Range, the "Coming Soon to Own on DVD & Video" clip-on appears twice, once before a trailer for Aladdin: Platinum Edition, and once again before trailers for Mulan: Special Edition and Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas (the latter of which, unusually for a 2004-06 DVD, appears on the second page of the Sneak Peeks menu on the disc instead of the first).
  • Conversely, on the 2005 DVD of The Parent Trap: 2-Movie Collection, a preview for Toy Story: 10th Anniversary Edition is shown, despite the "Now Available TO OWN ON DVD" bumper being missing. This could be because of a later reissue of Toy Story 2 being advertised at the preview's very end.
  • Normally, on any DVD with the Sneak Peeks menu variant, if you press "up" on "PLAY ALL," the cursor will move to "MAIN MENU." However, on The Pacifier, if you go to page 2, then press "up" on "PLAY ALL," the cursor will move to "BACK."
  • Likewise, when pressing down from "PLAY ALL" on the Sneak Peeks menu, it goes to the preview closest to it. However, on Home Improvement: The Complete Seventh Season, the preview underneath it on each respective page is for Blu-ray Disc and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, but pressing "down" instead highlights Wild Hogs or Underdog.
  • On the 2005-07 DVDs of Father of the Bride: 15th Anniversary Special Edition, Tarzan II and Higglytown Heroes: Heroes on the Move (the latter two of which feature Disney's FastPlay), after playing any or all of the previews on the Sneak Peeks menu, the user is returned to the main menu.
  • The upper text in each clip-on is in lowercase with capitalized letters, while the lower text is in all caps.
  • From 2006-09, the opening previews on any given disc featuring the Sneak Peeks menu were included on its second page (unless a release had only one page, in which case they all appear on the same page).
  • The filmreel background was reused for the 2005-20 IDs on the Coming Soon to Theaters ID.
  • On the 2008 DVDs of Enchanted and National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the Sneak Peeks menus have almost identical preview arrangements, especially on the first page, with only a few trailers differing between them. This can also be said for The Muppet Show: Season 3 and Home Improvement: The Complete Eighth Season (but with the latter having a third preview). These were among the last titles to use the 2005 variant.
  • In a similar case to the Flashbang bumpers, the trailers for titles available for rental only were preceded by the "...ON VIDEO", "...ON DVD", "...TO RENT ON VIDEO", and "...ON VIDEO & DVD" clip-ons. Meanwhile, titles available for purchase were preceded by the "...TO OWN ON VIDEO", "...TO OWN ON DVD", and "...TO OWN ON VIDEO & DVD" clip-ons.
  • On early releases with the Sneak Peeks menu, all the logos for titles fade in at once. Later releases with the menu show them all animate at once, and eventually show each logo animate in various ways.
  • These clip-ons were mostly relegated to most Buena Vista releases except most early-to-mid-2000s Dimension Home Video VHS tapes.
  • The Sneak Peeks menu background & music was still used on Buena Vista DVDs from 2006-2009 after the main bumpers were replaced with the 2006-2020 bumpers.
  • These are the first main bumpers not to feature the familiar segment of "Great Ovation," and also the last to use a voiceover.
    • It's also the first clip on not to use either version of the 1991 Walt Disney Home Video logo music that some previous bumpers also used.
  • DVDs released from 2000-05 with trailers include a still or full-motion card for each trailer after each bumper, while anything released afterward does not.

Variants:

  • While the upper text in each clip-on remains in a Helvetica Light font (similar to the JCPenney logo), the bottom text may appear in a different font, and each clip-on may animate differently, as explained below.
    • The clip-ons with the bottom text that appears in a widened Helvetica Light font animate in a smooth way (the lower text having a "motion blur" effect applied), with both the upper and lower texts sliding slowly while inside the screen.
    • In a few cases, the lower text appears in a widened Slippy-Regular font and slides into the golden strip slightly slower than usual. This version occurs only on the early version of the "Now Available ON VIDEO" clip-on, and the "Now Available ON CD" and "Join Us AFTER THE PROGRAM" clip-ons. A similar version appears on the "Join Us AFTER THE MOVIE" clip-on, except the text "AFTER THE MOVIE" is in a standard Verdana font.
    • In other cases, the lower text is in a standard Slippy-Regular font, emerges from the left side of the screen and swiftly slides into the golden strip. The upper text also emerges from the top of the screen before it falls to its usual position. This version occurs on the early version of the "Now Available TO OWN ON DVD" clip-on as well as the "New From DISNEY INTERACTIVE" and "New From THE SECRET LAB" clip-ons. This also applies to the later versions of the "Coming Soon to Theaters FROM DISNEY & PIXAR", "Now Available ON VIDEO", "Previews" and "Feature PROGRAM" clip-ons.
    • For both "COLLECTOR'S EDITION DVD" clip-ons, the bottom text appears in Helvetica Light.
  • The bumpers are cropped to 1.33:1 on The Incredibles, Toy Story: 10th Anniversary Edition, and Toy Story 2: Special Edition, with black vertical bars visible to the left and right of the screen.
  • On the 2006 widescreen DVD of Cars (which is one of the last releases to feature this bumper), there is a more detailed version where the 3-D text "Coming Soon" turns downward to face the viewer. "TO THEATERS" or "TO OWN ON DVD" (depending on the bumper used) swipes in from the left side of the screen and rotates to face the viewer, settling above the golden strip. The background from the original variant of the Sneak Peeks menu/bumper is used. It would appear this was a prototype for the next series of bumpers, as the 3-D text resembles the animation used in those bumpers. The fullscreen version uses the regular bumpers instead.
  • From 2000-05, text would appear on the bottom left corner that reads "Press [MENU] to play movie or to select other options." This usually appears on the first bumper used during the previews, and was first seen on the 2000 DVD of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins (although strangely, it appears over both clip-ons; this was also the case on the original release of Sin City, issued in 2005, as well as on two of the three clip-ons on The Brave Little Toaster, released in 2003). This text was removed starting with Home Improvement: The Complete Third Season (the last releases to use the text were The Golden Girls: The Complete Third Season and Toy Story 2: Two-Disc Special Edition).
    • On the 2004 DVD of That's So Raven: Supernaturally Stylish, the text appears on the second clip-on instead of the first.
  • UK/Irish and Greek DVDs have the white text "ON VIDEO & DVD" fade in and slide inside the golden strip instead.
    • As a side note, the 2000 UK/Irish DVDs of The Tigger Movie and Tarzan (possibly Disney's first ever DVDs in the regions to contain previews) features the "Coming Soon to Own on Video & DVD" variant, complete with the voiceover and music, only the bumper fades to black, then to a still card for the first preview.
    • This variant is translated to “Auf video and DVD” on German and Turkish DVDs.
    • This variant is translated to "EN VIDEO ET DVD" on some French DVDs.
    • On DVDs released in Spain, the bottom text is translated to “en video y DVD” and “Titulos que estan or estaran proximamente” is added above.
  • From October 28, 2003 to December 13, 2005, due to the rising DVD popularity, the bottom text in the Coming Soon/Now Available clip-ons was switched to "DVD & VIDEO." This version was first used on the 2003 VHS of Disney's Sing Along Songs: Brother Bear On My Way (the DVD counterpart uses the "VIDEO & DVD" versions), and made its first DVD appearances on Recess: All Growed Down and Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade.
  • Certain VHS releases, as described above and below this section, use different versions of this bumper that are tailor-made specifically for the release. However, the clip-ons and voiceovers remain the same.
  • There are two variants for the "Coming Soon to Theaters from Disney & Pixar" clip-on:
    • The font is in a bolder and slightly narrower Helvetica font, "Coming Soon" is above the gold rectangle, "TO THEATERS" is in it, and "From Disney & Pixar" (with "From" smaller) is arranged below it. Plus, the text is already partially shown just as the bumper appears. The DVD version of this bumper also cuts in rather than fading. This variant is seen only on the 2000 VHS and DVD releases of Toy Story 2.
    • "Coming Soon to Theaters" (now in the normal Helvetica Light font) is arranged above the gold rectangle and "FROM DISNEY & PIXAR" (in the Slippy-Regular font used for the Now Available to Own on DVD ID of the time) is in said rectangle. This variant only appears on the 2002 VHS release of Monsters, Inc.
  • There are two variants for the “Now Available on Video” clip-on:
    • On the 2000 VHS re-release of I'll Be Home for Christmas, "Now Available" is slightly narrower and "ON VIDEO" is in a widened Slippy-Regular font.
    • On the 2002 VHS of Spider-Man: The Return of the Green Goblin, "Now Available" is in Helvetica and "ON VIDEO" is in Slippy-Regular.
  • There are two variants for the “Now Available to Own On DVD” clip-on:
    • On VHS tapes such as the Vault Disney Collection series, Sweet Home Alabama, Moonlight Mile, Freaky Friday, Scary Movie 3, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, the slide-in is rougher, and the bottom text is in Verdana. Although most DVDs use the second variant, this variant continued usage on Roger Corman, Miramax and Dimension titles from 2005-06, such as Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, The Great Raid, Hostage, Tsotsi, Asphalt Wars, Deep Blue, Keeping Up with the Steins, Daltry Calhoun, An Unfinished Life, Bride & Prejudice, and Chicago: The Razzle-Dazzle Edition.
    • On most DVDs, both of the texts are presented in their usual font and slide-in smoothly.
  • There are two variants for the “Previews” clip-on:
    • 2000-01 demo tapes, such as The Kid, Crazy/Beautiful, High Fidelity, and Chocolat, feature a partly-formed still image of the bumper, and "Previews" sliding in from the left.
    • 2001-04 demo tapes, such as Unbreakable, Jerry Seinfeld: Comedian, Moonlight Mile, and Cold Creek Manor feature the bumper animating as usual, except this time, "Previews" comes down from the top.
  • There are two variants for the "New from Disney Interactive" clip-on:
    • "New From" is arranged above the gold rectangle in a white Helvetica font and "DISNEY INTERACTIVE" (in the Slippy-Regular font used for the Now Available to Own on DVD ID of the time) is in said rectangle.
    • A still version of this bumper appears only at the end of the American version of 2000 VHS release of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins whereas the Canadian version of the aforementioned 2000 VHS has the same bumper moved up to the beginning of the tape.
  • On Australian VHS tapes, there are also ratings bumpers that remove all the lines and rectangles from the background. The clip-ons for this are written in the Helvetica Light font and appear like this:
    • The following preview is classified [rating]
    • The following previews are classified [rating]
    • This following feature is classified [rating]
    • The following previews & feature are classified [rating]
  • There are two variants for the “Feature Presentation” clip-on:
    • On the standard "Feature Presentation" clip-on, the bumper moves differently. On a gold background, we see the text "Feature PRESENTATION" zooming to the left. Then, "Feature" zooms to the left and the "PRESENTATION" zooms to the right, changing the background to a blue background with a blurry filmreel on it, and they connect together in the middle. Gold arrows and multicolored rectangles move around the bumper in different ways. This was used on most Disney VHS releases during the era.
    • On some tapes released from 2001-05, a custom "Feature Presentation" bumper is shown like this: On a dusk background, we see a CGI version of Cinderella Castle on a cloud, with fireworks exploding. We zoom in and through the entrance at the same time as some stars. A large firework goes off in the center of the screen, while circles of filmstrips spin around, with a still image of a certain Disney/Pixar film on each frame. A circle of stars spins at the top of it. The filmstrips and circle of stars then go down as the text "FEATURE PRESENTATION", in gold (and in the same font as the 1st CGI FP bumper from the 1998 Masterpiece Collection VHS release of The Little Mermaid), comes up from the bottom of the screen. After the "FEATURE PRESENTATION" text moves up to the center of the screen, several fireworks fly up and explode behind the text. Then the bumper fades out. This variation was mostly used on reissues of animated classics from 2001-05, but a few new releases during those years also used this variation.
  • There are two variants for the “Feature Program” clip-on:
    • An earlier version used a still image that has the words scrunched together. In this case, the "Feature PROGRAM" text is very large. While "Feature" is slightly narrower, "PROGRAM" is wider and positioned above the golden strip.
    • A later version contains the same animation as the second variant of the "Coming Soon to Theaters FROM DISNEY & PIXAR" clip-on, except with "Feature" on top and "PROGRAM" on the golden strip.
  • On the "After the Feature" variant, the animation of the logo seems to be slowed down as well.
  • After the movie/program, the text "Special Bonus Material" is pasted over a textless version of the background from the usual filmreel ID. This variant appears only on Australian VHS tapes.
  • Very rare variants exist on Australian VHS tapes which feature very generic text and concern specific "after the feature" events. Instead of matching up with the other bumpers, some bumpers don't match at all, instead being in a plain white Arial font, with a black shadow drop effect applied:
    • "Stay tuned after the feature for a special music video"
    • "Stay tuned after the feature for a bonus short"
    • "Stay tuned after this feature for special bonus material"
  • There is an extremely rare variant that is seen on the 2000 VHS release of Diamonds. The colored squares and golden arrows are removed from the filmreel background, and instead of the usual text, we see "Join Us After the Feature for a Special Message," in gold, displayed on the screen.
  • A few of the clip-ons were translated into Spanish and French for U.S. Spanish and French Canadian VHS and DVD releases, respectively.
  • There are multiple variants for the "Sneak Peek" clip-on:
    • On the original release of The Lion King 1 1/2, the filmreel is slightly thicker. This may be because it was the earliest known DVD designed with this bumper, as the disc files are dated 12/5/03. (Open Range, which uses the normal icon, has its files dating to 12/9/03,)
    • On some earlier DVDs with the original variant, the logos faded in all at once. This can be seen on The Lion King 1 1/2, Brother Bear, The Haunted Mansion, Calendar Girls, Hope Springs, and Ghosts of the Abyss. The first DVD to use animation on the logos was Duplex, which exclusively features a preview for Miramax, whose logo slides in from the right side of the screen.
    • Duplex and The Third Wheel also has the menu fade in.
    • In August of 2004, the boxes were deleted, therefore leaving the background as just plain blue. However, Disney releases continued to use the original variant until October.
    • Later in 2004, the text font is different, the lines became thinner and the background is now slightly darker. Releases with this variant include Ladder 49, The Village, Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and Bambi: Platinum Edition. This makes a strange appearance on the second page of trailers on the 2005 DVDs of Popular: The Complete Second Season and Walt Disney's Classic Cartoon Favorites: Volume 7 - Extreme Adventure Fun, despite the first page using the 2005 variant.
    • Another variant was introduced in March 2005, where the animation runs smoother, the filmreel background is different, and the logo animations run at different times instead of running simultaneously.
    • In some rare cases, the menu appears already formed. This variant can be found on Rolie Polie Olie: Springy-Time Fun, Open Range, Under the Tuscan Sun, The Magdalene Sisters, Discover Spot, City of God, Freaky Friday, Boy Meets World: The Complete First Season, Power Rangers Dino Thunder: Volume 1 - Day of the Dino, Lizzie McGuire: StarStruck, Lizzie McGuire: Totally Crushed, The Station Agent, Disney Princess Party Volume 1, Disney Princess Stories: Vol. 1 - A Gift from the Heart, Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys, early pressings of Hostage, The Boys Are Back, Army Wives: The Complete Third Season, and StarStruck.
    • On some DVDs, a black screen appears before the menu plays, while others go straight to the start of the menu.
    • Some releases with the original variant, including Brother Bear, Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers, Home on the Range, and Cold Creek Manor, have the menu (but not the logos) colored darker.
    • On the 2004 DVDs of Cold Creek Manor, Veronica Guerin, and Bad Santa, after the menu forms and the filmreel disappears, the last part of the menu animation (after the logos fully form and the icon first appears) repeats itself.
    • Sometimes, the filmreel appears in its inverted form (gold with blue holes; this inverts to the blue version when an option is selected), and on the earliest releases, in silver with gray holes and orange with brown holes (the orange one only appears when a trailer is selected; the last release with this version is City of God). The gold version is used on most 2009-10 DVDs with the custom variants.
      • On the 2004 DVD of Rolie Polie Olie: Springy-Time Fun, depending on where the Sneak Peeks menu is accessed from, the filmreel icon is either red (Happy Hearts Day) or green (Easter Egg-Stravaganza). After selecting an option on either menu, it turns yellow.
      • On the 2004 DVDs of The Haunted Mansion and Pokémon: Jirachi Wish Maker, the icon appears in the blue version, but when a menu option is selected, it switches to the orange version.
      • On the 2004 DVD of Power Rangers Dino Thunder: Volume 1 - Day of the Dino, when a trailer is selected, the filmreel icon turns from silver to light blue with gray holes.
      • On the 2004 DVD of Lizzie McGuire: StarStruck, the blue portions appear more purple.
      • On the 2004 DVD of The Golden Girls: The Complete First Season, the first page features the blue version, while the second page features the gold version.
      • On the 2004-05 DVDs of Around the World in 80 Days, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Porco Rosso, and The Cat Returns, the filmreel icon is shaded differently.
      • On the 2005 DVD of The Last Shot, the second page features another unusual color scheme for the filmreel icon: When navigating the menu, the icon is in green. When selecting a preview, it turns gold. (The first page has the blue version.)
      • On the 2005 DVDs of Hostage and Cursed, the icon is positioned in odd places: when highlighting "PLAY ALL," "MORE/BACK," or "MAIN MENU," the icon is placed partway through the arrows rather than above them, and when highlighting a trailer, the icon is placed next to the logos rather than on them.
      • On the 2005 DVD of My Neighbors the Yamadas, the blue version is used, except the foreground icon is redesigned in that the shape is smaller and "wings" are seen on both sides. (When selecting an option, the normal gold icon is used.)
      • On the 2007 DVD of DuckTales: Volume 3, the icon is in green, much like on The Last Shot, except on both pages. Also, when a preview is selected, it turns darker green.
    • Some releases have the logos animate at a choppier framerate, while others have them at a smoother rate.
    • Certain DVDs only have one page of trailers. As a result, "MORE" is deleted.
    • On the 2006 DVD of Goal! The Dream Begins, the filmreel icon appears approximately 4 seconds into the menu animation.
    • On In Search of Santa and Scrubs: The Complete Second Season, the vertical arrows are slightly extended on the first page to the point where a thin green line appears on the bottom of the screen, and when you go to the second page, the arrows shorten a bit until the line disappears. It's also like this on The Ladykillers and Alias: The Complete Fourth Season, except with the horizontal arrows.
    • On the 2005 DVD of The Golden Girls: The Complete Third Season, if one goes to the second page, the light emanating from an icon representing a preview of the next season's then-forthcoming DVD release takes up the entire right half.
    • On the 2008 DVD of Home Improvement: The Complete Eighth Season, the filmreel icon is replaced with an orange house (based on the show's logo), with a red rooftop. When one of the options is clicked, the orange portion turns yellow. The menu itself is also brighter than usual.
    • On the 2008 DVD of The Muppet Show: Season 3, the filmreel icon is replaced with Wall-E from the film of the same name, which was promoted on the disc.
    • On the two aforementioned titles, Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas appears on the left side of the screen.
    • On the 2008 DVD of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: Lip Synchin' in the Rain, the filmreel icon is replaced with an orange hotel key.
    • In the summer of 2008, the menu was enhanced. Here, the background looks slightly realistic (and the filmreels appear to have been placed against the background of the 2007 Blu-ray idents, judging by some brief flashing that occurs), the texts are in metallic silver, “Sneak Peeks” (also now in metallic silver) turns downward to face the viewer, the "PLAY ALL," "MORE/BACK," and "MAIN MENU" texts fade in once the logos are in place, and the arrows are thinner and spaced further apart.
      • A 1.33:1 version of this appears on the 2008 DVD release of Scrubs: The Complete Seventh Season, while the rest of the menus are presented in 1.85:1.
    • On the 2008 DVD releases of City of Men and Greek: Chapter Two, the cursor is in red.
    • From 2009-10, the background, cursors, and text/arrow colors would vary depending on the release. The animation of “Sneak Peeks” remains the same (although some DVDs have different animation for the text), though some releases also leave off the arrows entirely. In some cases, you can see the filmreels. Here are some variants:
      • Up: A still of Carl Fredriksen's house flying upwards. Regular cursor, yellow text, no arrows.
      • Bolt: Over a orange colored background. Custom cursor, black text, yellow arrows (seen here)
      • Pinocchio: Platinum Edition: Over a still of two fox characters at a wall. Regular cursor, yellow text, no arrows (seen here)
      • Old Dogs: An iceberg with many penguins on it, in front of a mountain. Regular cursor, red text, no arrows.
      • The Proposal: The filmreel background from the earlier versions, tinted in teal with cream yellow bars at the top and bottom. Regular cursor, blue text, no arrows.
      • Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Adventures in Wonderland: A forest scene animated in the style of the show, tinted in pink. Regular cursor, yellow text, no arrows.
      • G-Force: A grid shown through a monitor. Regular cursor, blue text, no arrows.
      • Surrogates: A computer program, with an outline of a person. Regular cursor, blue text, blue arrows.
      • Blindness: A grayscaled version of the normal menu. Regular cursor, black text, light gray arrows.
      • Swing Vote: The American flag. Here, "Sneak Peeks" is already there, and enclosed in a bar with the logos of the two major political parties. Plus, "PLAY ALL," "MORE/BACK," and "MAIN MENU" are in a different font. Custom cursor (a red star), blue text, no arrows.
      • Morning Light: An overhead shot of the sea, with a yacht sailing away and some compasses in the lower left and upper right corners. Regular cursor, yellow text, light blue arrows (although these are a little hard to see).
      • Happy Go Lucky: A beige background of clouds scrolling by. Custom cursor (purple peach), black text, yellow arrows.

Technique: Most of the clip-ons use 2D computer animation. Some of the clip-ons, however, have the text animate differently or are still images with fading effects. The custom Feature Presentation clip-on uses CGI.

Audio: A somber 2-note flat electronic synth theme, with electronic beeping in the background, and a slight whoosh/choir near the end, with Brian Cummings or Beau Weaver announcing the clip-on.

Audio Variants:

  • The "Disney Interactive," "From Playhouse Disney," "Now Available for PSP," and Australian variations don't have the announcer.
  • The international "ON VIDEO & DVD" bumper is silent. The "Coming Soon TO THEATERS" and "Coming Soon TO OWN ON VIDEO & DVD" bumpers are also silent on the 2000-05 DVD releases of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins and the original release of Sin City, as is the "Coming Soon TO OWN ON DVD" bumper on the 2003 DVD of Daredevil vs. Spider-Man. However, the VHS version of the former and the latter's other bumpers, however, use the normal audio.
  • The "Feature Presentation" and "Feature Program" clip-ons used a flat, somber 3-note synth theme culminating in a distant drumroll.
  • A version of the "Feature Presentation" bumper with Beau Weaver announcing Cummings' line “And now, our feature presentation.” at a slightly faster rate exists.
  • Another version of the "Feature Presentation" ID consists of Brian Cummings announcing his line in a cheerful tone of voice. This variant mainly appears on Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection VHS tapes and 2000-02 VHS releases of several family-friendly titles from BVHE. It premiered on the Gold Classic Collection reissue of Mulan, and last appeared on the 2002 VHS of Monsters Inc.. This voiceover variant was also used on some of its custom IDs listed above and below.
  • On the Diamonds variant of the “Join Us...” clip-on, the ID is silent except for Tom Kane saying, "Join us after the feature for a special message from Kirk Douglas."
  • On the demo tape of Inspector Gadget 2, the exact same voiceover from Brian Cummings and music from the standard edition's animated version of the 1992-2006 Stay Tuned ID are heard instead. See this page for more info.
  • On the "After the Feature" variant, Tom Kane says, "Watch the trailers from writer/director Quentin Tarantino, coming up right after the feature." Instead of the standard flat music, a song from the film's soundtrack, "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" by Tomoyasu Hotei, is used in its place.
  • On the custom "FEATURE PRESENTATION" variant, there's no announcer at all, and a loud, majestic fanfare with a change in pitch at the very end is heard.
  • On the 2002 Australian VHS of Kate & Leopold, the normal music is used on the standard Feature Presentation clip-on, possibly due to a video duplication error.
  • On post-2001 DVDs and titles with the “...DVD AND VIDEO”, “Now Available ON VIDEO” and “...TO OWN ON DVD” clip-ons, Cummings' voiceover is heard in the middle of the bumper instead of the beginning.
  • On most DVDs with the “Coming Soon ON DVD”, “Now Available TO OWN ON VIDEO & DVD”, and “Now Available ON DVD” clip-ons beginning in 2001, Cummings’ voiceover is more enthusiastic.
  • On DVDs with the “Now Available TO OWN ON DVD” clip-on, Cummings’ voiceover is more relaxed; more relaxed sounding voiceovers were also used for the "DVD & VIDEO" bumper variants that began usage in 2003. Strangely, the 2006 DVD release of Asphalt Wars instead uses the original voiceover.
  • On the 2003 DVD of Freaky Friday, the voiceover for the second bumper is "Coming Soon To Own on Video and DVD", which is odd since the bumper reads "Coming Soon to Own on DVD and Video".
  • On VHS up until 2003, as well as the 2002 DVD of Max Keeble's Big Move, Cummings' voiceover is heard a split second after the bumper begins.
  • On most DVDs, there is a slight delay before the voiceover is heard on most clip-ons.
  • On the 2004-05 DVDs of Open Range, The Haunted Mansion, and Prozac Nation, the audio for their respective "Coming Soon TO OWN ON DVD & VIDEO," "Coming Soon TO THEATERS," and "Now Available TO OWN ON DVD" clip-ons are out of sync.
  • On the 2005 DVD of Desperate Housewives: The Complete First Season, before the preview for Alias: The Complete Fourth Season, the "Coming Soon TO OWN ON DVD" variant is silent.
  • The "Sneak Peeks" version had a brief shimmering sound when "Sneak Peeks" appears, then a deep but very calm synth theme (based on the regular idents' music) is heard, along with sound effects corresponding to the movie logos appearing. There are also several beeping sounds like those present in IDs used at the time. Composed by Walter Werzowa at Musikvergnuegen. None for the still variant.
    • On the 2004 DVD of Rolie Polie Olie: Springy-Time Fun, a whimsical cue based on music from the show plays over the menu.
    • On the 2004 DVDs of The Lion King 1 1/2, Cold Creek Manor, Hope Springs, Veronica Guerin, The Magdalene Sisters and The Third Wheel, as well as a couple of DVDs from 2006 (Quack Pack: Volume 1 being one of them) and DVDs with the 2008 variant, the music is slightly longer, with each note being held for one beat longer.
    • On the 2004 DVD of The Haunted Mansion, most of the shimmering is omitted.
    • On the 2004-08 DVDs of Miracle, Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock, Tarzan: Special Edition, Lady and the Tramp: 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition, The Muppet Show: Season 2, and The Aristocats: Special Edition, the theme is one second out-of-sync.
    • On the 2004 DVD release of Power Rangers Dino Thunder: Volume 1 - Day of the Dino, the same music as heard on the disc's other submenus plays.
    • An even shorter version can be found on Around the World in 80 Days, after the menu is fully animated, in which the very last split-second of the music plays and loops constantly.
    • On DVDs released from January 2004-June 2005, there are no sound effects corresponding to the logos. On Where's Spot/Spot Goes to the Farm, Father of the Bride: 15th Anniversary Special Edition, Tilt: The Complete First Season, and Tarzan II, this variant plays in a repeated loop after the menu finishes animating. (It's also like this on People I Know, but only when visiting either page for the first time; after playing a trailer, the menu stays silent.) The last DVDs not to use any sound effects are Hostage and Cursed; starting with The Pacifier, sound effects were used for the logos, although a sound effect was first heard on the earlier Spider-Man: The Venom Saga and The Best of Tokyo Pig, where a slamming sound is heard as the logo for Power Rangers SPD animates. Surprisingly, this variant was used on Toby Tyler, issued in August 2005, as well as the 2008 DVD of Snow Buddies.
      • On the 2004 DVD of The Magdalene Sisters, the music loops despite the menu being still.
    • On the 2005-07 DVDs of Mulan II and Home Improvement: The Complete Sixth Season, the volume is lower than usual.
    • On the 2007 DVD of The Invisible, the sound effects heard on Primeval (corresponding to logos for Apocalypto, Ratatouille, Renaissance, The Lookout, and Roger Corman) play while the disc's own logos (for Wild Hogs, Ratatouille, Lost: The Complete Third Season, and Becoming Jane) animate, likely due to an editing mistake.
    • On the 2007-09 DVDs of 8 Simple Rules: The Complete First Season and Bunnytown: Hello Bunnies!, once again, the menu's theme loops after it fully forms, complete with the logos' sound effects.
    • The 2008-10 variants each have their own custom music (example: on A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa, an instrumental version of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" plays). Notably, on Race to Witch Mountain, The Boys Are Back, Army Wives: The Complete Third Season, and StarStruck, a looping theme plays, which varies by disc.

Audio Trivia: The music score for this style of clip-on is entirely custom, composed by Walter Werzowa at Musikvergnuegen, who also composed the Intel leitmotif & its variants used beginning in 1994, the music of the 1998-2007 and 2002-2010s Buena Vista Home Video/Entertainment logos, the music of the 2004-09 sneak peeks menu, and the EW Scripps news music package used from 2009-12.

Availability: Though the availability of each clip-on variant varies, the ID as a whole is very common, since it appeared on numerous VHS tapes and DVDs released under the Walt Disney family of labels (Buena Vista, Walt Disney, Touchstone, Miramax, Dimension, and Hollywood) during this time period. However, they do not appear on most early-to-mid-2000s Dimension Home Video VHS tapes (and possibly some Warren Miller tapes), the 2003-04 Miramax DVDs of Mouth to Mouth and Valentin, releases with Disney's Fast Play, or Disney's final VHS releases, from 2006-07 (only available through the Disney Movie Club).

  • The bumper set as a whole debuted on the 1999 VHS releases of Disney's Annie and Miramax's The Very Thought of You, both released on the same day.
  • The "Coming Soon to Theaters from Disney & Pixar" variants only appear on the original VHS releases of Toy Story 2 and Monsters, Inc., as well as the former's original DVD.
  • The "Disney Interactive" variant is seen on the 2000-03 VHS releases of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, Mickey's House of Villains, Sorority Boys, ESPN's Ultimate X: The Movie, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
  • The "Now in Theaters" variant was debuted on the 1999 VHS of Summer of Sam. Like with the Flashbang variant, it was only rarely used, but it can be found on the 2003 VHS and DVD releases of Bringing Down the House, the 2005 DVD release of Finding Neverland, and the 2005 VHS release of Darkness, among a few others. It was also apparently intended to be used on the 2000 Gold Classic Collection DVD of A Goofy Movie, preceding a trailer for Fantasia 2000, but both are hidden within the disc files and not used on the actual release (probably because of a release date delay or an authoring mistake).
  • The "ON VIDEO & DVD" variant is seen on UK/Irish and Greek DVDs.
  • The "Now Available Collector's Edition DVD" variant can be seen on the 2005 DVD release of The Great Raid.
  • The first DVD to use these bumpers is the original 2000 release of Tarzan, and the last to use them are the 2006 DVD releases of High School Musical: Remix Edition and Disney DVD Game World: Disney Dogs Edition - Blue Ribbon Challenge.
  • Some demo tapes, such as Swing and Music of the Heart, use the standard clip-ons instead of the "Previews" one. Conversely, the "Coming Soon TO THEATERS" clip-on appears on a few demo tapes, such as Jerry Seinfeld: Comedian and Moonlight Mile, alongside the "Previews" one.
  • The "VIDEO" variants were last seen in the summer of 2005, examples being A Lot Like Love and The Pacifier.
  • The earlier "Feature PROGRAM" version can be seen on some 2000 tapes, such as Out of the Box: Happy Holidays and the re-releases of the Winnie the Pooh: Storybook Classics and 101 Dalmatians: Christmas. This version reappeared on several tapes from 2005: Disney Princess - Princess Stories Volume 2, Cadet Kelly, My Scene Goes Hollywood: The Movie, Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie, Power Rangers S.P.D. VHS tapes, the 2005/2006 screener VHS of Bambi II, and The Even Stevens Movie. However, some of them are full-fledged movies.
  • The later "Feature Program" version is seen only on the 2002-04 VHS releases of Spider-Man: The Return of the Green Goblin, Schoolhouse Rock!: 30th Anniversary Edition, The Incredible Hulk, Disney's Sing Along Songs: Brother Bear - On My Way, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: Planet of the Lost, and Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Home on the Range - A Little Patch of Heaven.
  • The last retail tape to use the regular Feature Presentation clip-on was the 2006 VHS of Bambi II, and the last tape to use it overall was the 2006/07 demo tape of Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.
  • The Beau Weaver version of the "Feature Presentation" clip-on is extremely rare, as it was only seen on the 2000 VHS releases of Toy Story and Tarzan.
  • The custom "Feature Presentation" clip-on is uncommon, bordering on rare, but it appears on the 2001-05 VHS releases of Atlantis: The Lost Empire, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2, Cinderella II: Dreams Come True, all 2001-05 Platinum Edition releases, the 2002 Special Editions of Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas and Oliver & Company, 2002 prints of the Gold Classic Collection reissue of Mary Poppins (the 2004 VHS has the standard Feature Presentation clip-on), The Incredibles (the only Pixar tape to use it, all other Pixar tapes use the standard Feature Presentation clip-on), the 2002-03 VHS re-releases of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dinosaur, The Emperor's New Groove, and Sleeping Beauty, and the 2002 VHS of The Great Mouse Detective, among others. The last tape to use it was the 2005 Platinum Edition VHS of Cinderella (1950).
  • The "Sneak Peek" clip-on always precedes the long trailer for The Lion King 1 1/2, and was seen on mid-to-late 2003 VHS releases like Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Music Man, Finding Nemo, and George of the Jungle 2 (their DVDs all skip it).
  • The "Sneak Peeks" version is, arguably, the most common of all, as it can be seen on many DVD releases of Buena Vista-owned properties from the period. However, since it is more of a menu than a bumper, it can only be accessed by selecting "SNEAK PEEKS" from the main menu of the DVD.
    • The original variant was first seen on both Rollie Polie Olie: Springy-Time Fun (in still form) and Where's Spot/Spot Goes to the Farm (in animated form), and last appeared on Home on the Range. The shortened music first appeared on Where's Spot/Spot Goes to the Farm.
    • The second variant is the least common, having only been used for a few months in 2004 to early 2005, but it first appeared on Ella Enchanted.
    • The third variant was used from the end of 2004 all the way until spring 2005, and was first seen on Around the World in 80 Days (2004).
    • The fourth variant, which is the most common by far, was used from 2005-08. It debuted on Beyblade: The Movie - Fierce Battle and made its final appearances on Phineas and Ferb: The Fast and the Phineas and Wizards of Waverly Place: Wizard School.
    • The fifth variant (which debuted two years after Disney's 1999-2006 bumpers were retired) was only used briefly, and can be seen on titles from the last half of 2008, beginning with College Road Trip and ending with The Secret of the Magic Gourd.
    • This menu strangely doesn't appear on Pokémon Heroes, Alice in Wonderland: Masterpiece Edition, Winnie the Pooh: Springtime with Roo, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, the Miramax Collector's Series reissue of Rounders, Jersey Girl, My Scene Goes Hollywood: The Movie, the original release of Sin City, and Pixar DVDs from 2004-08, while some titles such as The Golden Girls: The Complete Second Season, Scrubs: The Complete First Season, and the original release of Apocalypto (reissued by Samuel Goldwyn Films in 2020) forgo previews (and therefore, this menu) entirely.
    • On Pixar releases, only Up used this menu proper, while most other releases featured a custom menu (the only exceptions being Ratatouille and Pixar Short Films Collection, which have no menu at all). Post-2010 Pixar releases (except Onward and Elemental, both of which lack previews), go straight to the previews when "SNEAK PEEKS" is selected from the main menu.
    • Also, this can be accessed on the 2005 DVD release of Sky High from both the regular menu option and as an Easter egg when the viewer highlights the bus window on the main menu, to the left of "SCENE SELECTION". On The Great Raid, released later that year, it can be accessed from the special features menu.
    • This menu is usually on the first disc of a multi-disc set, but on most post-2006 TV releases such as seasons 2-4 of Lost, seasons 3 and 4 of Grey's Anatomy, Alias: The Complete Fifth Season, and the first two seasons of Ugly Betty and Brothers and Sisters, it appears on the last disc. (Releases of Home Improvement, The Golden Girls, and The Muppet Show, however, still kept it on the first disc, as did the first season of 8 Simple Rules.) It was also used on the second disc of the 2004 DVD releases of Cold Mountain and The English Patient.
  • Weirdly, the "Feature Presentation" clip-on doesn't appear on the 2000 VHS of Outside Providence.

Editor's Notes: The quality of the clip-ons from this era of bumpers is wildly inconsistent, arguably more so than any of the other styles of bumpers. On a positive note, the subdued, soothing atmosphere marks this era of bumpers as a thankfully calmer and more welcoming turn after the ending of the 1994 era of bumpers.

  • While some of the clip-ons properly match the layout and overall quality of the FP bumper of the time, others are visibly not as good, and still others look like they were made on a shoestring budget.
  • As for the earlier "Feature Program" version, it has been criticized as a rush job by some, due to the still animation and the smaller "PROGRAM" text not in the gold bar, both of which contrast significantly with most bumpers from the era. Presumably, this was a placeholder for the previously mentioned bumper, but even by those standards, it's still considered sloppy. The later “Feature Program” version can be considered an improvement over the previous one as more effort was put into it, although the earlier variant was used more often.
  • The standard Feature Presentation clip-on is recognized by many as one of Dinsey's most memorable bumpers, due its stand out animation from the other bumpers, and a gorgeous musical piece.
  • For the custom Feature Presentation clip-on, the fanfare and the fast pace can catch some viewers off guard, especially those who were usually expecting the standard variant, but it's a harmless bumper really. It could worsen if those viewers fear the THX logo on THX-certified tapes, as either it or the 2000 modified screen usually follows this bumper. The fact that this variant has no announcer doesn't help either.
  • For the "Sneak Peeks" version, the 2004-06 DVDs of Duplex, Hu$tle, and Grey's Anatomy: The Complete First Season use this menu despite having only one preview, and the first two still bother to use a "PLAY ALL" option, therefore providing two ways to select the sole trailer.
