1987–1990[]

Bumper: On a light blue-blue gradient background, we see a clapboard with the CBS/FOX logo (without the word "VIDEO") in it which later fades into the blue-light blue gradient italic words "HOME VIDEO PREVIEW". The clapboard claps and we fade out.

Variants:

  • After the previews, the clapboard reappears, and this time the words read "CHECK YOUR LOCAL VIDEO STORE FOR DETAILS". This fades into CBS/FOX logo from before and then "FEATURE PRESENTATION" appears in the same text style.
    • There is a short version in which "CHECK YOUR LOCAL VIDEO STORE FOR DETAILS" is missing. This version can be found on some of the CBS/Fox Video, Key Video and Playhouse Video tapes that have this bumper.
  • On the 1988 VHS of Predator, the bumpers are done with different text and a different color scheme. The clapperboard is light blue, and the words "Preview of Coming Attractions" wipe onto it in a script font, omitting the CBS/FOX logo entirely. The background is a purple-dark purple gradient.
    • Following the previews, the "CHECK YOUR LOCAL VIDEO STORE FOR DETAILS" text appears by itself on a dark blue background with a grey line in the center. The words "Feature Presentation" then wipe onto the clapboard, in the same font as before.
  • On Playhouse Video releases, the bumper is set on a yellow-blue gradient background, the text is white, and the Playhouse Video logo is shown instead of the CBS/FOX Video logo.
  • On Key Video releases such as History of the World Part 1, the bumper is on a light blue-pink gradient background, the text isn't italicized, and the Key Video logo is shown instead of the CBS/FOX Video logo.
    • Some Key Video releases go straight to the "FEATURE PRESENTATION" portion. On later 1989 Key Video tapes such as The Charlie Chan Collection and The Betty Grable Collection, the words "FEATURE PRESENTATION WILL FOLLOW" are seen instead. Both versions are not italicized.
    • On the original VHS of Slam Dance, after the Key Video logo appears, it fades to "MUSIC VIDEO", before fading to "FEATURE PRESENTATION WILL FOLLOW".
  • The Playhouse Video and Key Video versions also exist in black and white.

FX/SFX: The shining and the clapping.

Music/Sounds/Voiceover: An announcer says "CBS/Fox Video presents, a home video preview.", followed by a clap. The announcer is Bill St. James of Discovery Channel EXPLORE YOUR WORLD.

Music/Sounds/Voiceover Variants:

  • The Predator variant has the announcer saying "The following films will soon be available on videocassette, from CBS/FOX Video.”
  • The Key Video variant has the announcer saying "Key Video presents, a home video preview."
  • The Playhouse Video variant has the announcer saying "Playhouse Video presents, a home video preview."
  • The "Feature Presentation" variants have "Check your local video store for details. And now, for our feature presentation.", followed by a clap.
  • Sub-variants of the "Feature Presentation" variant exist:
    • On the short CBS/Fox and Key Video variants, the announcer just says "And now, for our feature presentation."
    • On the short Playhouse Video variant, the announcer just says "And now, our feature presentation."
    • On the Playhouse Video variant, the announcer says "Check your local video store for details. And now, our feature presentation".
    • The "FEATURE PRESENTATION WILL FOLLOW" variant is silent.
    • The Slam Dance version has the announcer say "Check your local video store for details. Key Video is proud to present the hit Slam Dance music video 'High Hopes.' Slam Dance the movie will follow."

Availability: Rare.

  • It appears on certain CBS/Fox Video, Key Video and Playhouse Video releases from the 1980's such as the original 1988 VHS releases of A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, Overboard, and Oklahoma!, among others.
  • The short CBS/Fox version can be seen on the original 1989 VHS of A Fish Called Wanda.
  • The short Playhouse Video version can be seen on the 1987 Playhouse Video re-release of Fairy Tale Theater: Cinderella.
  • It also appears on early prints of the original VHS of Die Hard (later prints use the Lydian bumpers instead).
  • Strangely, these bumpers appear on the screener VHS of Say Anything, while the retail release uses the Lydian bumpers.

1987 (Star Wars)[]

Opening_To_Star_Wars_1984_VHS_(1987_reprint)

Opening To Star Wars 1984 VHS (1987 reprint)

(Preview bumper at the beginning of the video; feature presentation version at 2:21)

Bumper: The 3rd CBS Fox Video logo animates as normal, but then once it finishes, it electrocutes, and then the viewer's screen goes to a space background. An X-Wing from the original Star Wars trilogy flies from the bottom of the screen, and centers itself on it, before doing a barrel roll and zooming off into the distance. Then, another X-Wing appears from the bottom left of the screen. It shoots at an asteroid that zooms in, also appearing, from the top right of the screen. The asteroid explodes, and then a white sphere comes in (again, from the top right) and positions itself on the center of the screen, while the Star Wars logo, in silver, zooms out and settles on it. A ring, also silver, with the words "THE FIRST TEN YEARS" appears, sparkling in the process. Then, two small rectangles (yet again silver) position themselves on both sides of the ring, with the one on the left containing the year that Star Wars was first released (1977), and the one on the right containing the year of the trilogy's 10th anniversary (1987). The completed Star Wars 10th Anniversary logo then sparkles, as the space background continues to slowly move past, before the bumper freezes, and then fades out.

Variant: A short version exists as a feature presentation variant.

FX/SFX: The animation.

Music/Sounds: Begins with a few notes of the trilogy's end credits theme, and then an electric zap sound. Then, there is a whooshing sound, followed by a note that is being held, along with other sound effects that accompany the actions. After that is an additional six notes of music, and then it ends with Bill St. James saying "CBS Fox Video is proud to present a preview of the complete Star Wars trilogy."

Music/Sounds/Variant: The variant just used the announcer saying "And now, for our feature presentation" in the same tone as the previous one.

Availability: Rare. It was seen on the 1987 re-releases of the Star Wars trilogy.

Widescreen Series Exclusive Clip-Ons:

  • Behind-the-Scenes Featurette

Trivia:

  • On the 1991 CBS/Fox Video VHS releases of Edward Scissorhands and Come See the Paradise (the last videos released before FoxVideo's formation), before a trailer for Robin Hood, the "COMING FROM FoxVideo JULY 1991" clip-on is used.
  • On the 1991 VHS of Predator 2, the "PREVIEW" clip-on is pluralized, despite Point Break being the only movie advertised on the tape.
  • On the 2005 VHS of I ♥ Huckabees, the 2005 variant of the "COMING SOON TO DVD & VIDEO" clip-on appears twice (once before a trailer for What the Bleep Do We Know!? and again before a trailer for Incident at Loch Ness), but with the text spaced closer together the second time.

Variants:

  • The font varies by tape:
    • 1988-1991: Lydian
    • 1991-1993: ITC Avant Garde
    • 1990-2001: Helvetica
    • 2001-2005: Compacta
    • Aurora
  • On Widescreen Series VHS tapes, and from 1999-2001, on VHS tapes from The Siege to Python, the text was in lowercase.
  • Sometimes, a slightly different font is used. The Century Gothic Light font is used on some 1991 Fox Video releases, while the Helvetica font is used on some 1991-93 Fox Video releases. Depending on the release, the text can vary in font and capitalization.
    • On tapes released in the Go West Collection, such as Duel in the Sun, a tall font is used.
  • On the 1991-92 VHS releases of An Affair to Remember, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Intermezzo (which has it in black and white), the full Fox Video logo is used instead, with the voiceover being used on the logo.
  • On the 1989-90 VHS releases of Working Girl and The Abyss, "THEATRICAL" is missing.
  • From 1989-91, additional text would be shown after the "Home Video Preview" and "Theatrical Preview" clip-ons, with Bill St. James narrating it.
  • On the 1991 VHS of The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, a purple gradient background is used. The text is also in a bold italicized font.
  • Collector's preview variants:
    • Before the Dangerous Desires Collection trailer, the clip-on is seen with text below reading "The motion pictures advertised in this trailer are rated R". An MPAA R rating symbol is seen next to the text.
    • Before the Gangster Collection trailer, the clip-on is seen with centered text below reading "All the films in this GANGSTER COLLECTION are NOT RATED except ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE, which is SUGGESTED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES". "NOT RATED" and "SUGGESTED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES" have boxes around them.
  • Feature presentation variants:
    • Sometimes, the text varies in size.
    • On the 1991 VHS releases of Stars and Stripes Forever and Sun Valley Serenade, the words are in another different font.
    • On the 1992 VHS releases of An Affair to Remember and Spellbound, the bumper is superimposed on a gold gradient background and the words "FEATURE PRESENTATION" are in a different bold font.
      • On the 1992 VHS of Notorious, this variant is in black and white.
    • On the 1992 VHS of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the bumper is superimposed over the background of the tape's "Theatrical Trailer" bumper and the words "Feature Presentation" are in italics and in the filmstrip.
  • Sneak Preview variants:
    • On Bad Dreams and Big, the text is in a smaller font than usual.
    • On Cocoon: The Return, a custom version of the Sneak Preview screen is seen with the text in blue over a shot from the movie.
    • On Say Anything, all the text is in pink.
    • On Predator 2, the background is a black-blue gradient from top to bottom, and the text is bold and italic.
    • On Grand Canyon, the text is in white and in an Arial Bold font, and the background is teal-black gradient.
  • On the 1999 VHS releases of Entrapment and Best Laid Plans, a different font is used.
  • A misspelled version of the "AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEO & DVD" clip-on can be found on the 2002 VHS releases of Behind Enemy Lines and Black Knight, where the third "A" in "AVAILABLE" is missing.
  • In 2003, three of the clip-ons were changed to "NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD & VIDEO", "COMING SOON TO DVD & VIDEO" and "AVAILABLE TO OWN ON DVD & VIDEO".
  • On the 2001 VHS releases of Bedazzled (2000), Bootmen, and Python, the clip-ons are in a thinner font and in lowercase.
  • On the 2003 VHS of X2: X-Men United, the clip-ons are in a metallic font.
  • Tapes from 2005 have the text rearranged in a more compact font.

FX/SFX: None, or the fading.

Music/Sounds:

  • 1988-1993: An announcer (Bill St. James, also known for voicing Nick at Nite, Discovery Channel, Showtime & Adult Swim promos, as well as Rooms to Go commercials) says the text.
  • 1993-2005: None.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On 1988-1991 CBS/Fox Video releases with the "Collector's Preview" clip-on, the announcer (Bill St. James, like the 1st bumper) says "CBS/Fox Video presents a collector's preview."
  • On tapes from the Courage in Combat Collection, the "Collector’s Preview" clip-on is played with music in the background (a military marching beat, which also plays at the start of the trailer).
  • On some 1991-1992 Fox Video releases with the "Collector's Preview" clip-on, the announcer says "Fox Video presents a collector's preview."
  • On the "Feature Presentation" clip-on, the announcer says "And now, for our feature presentation".
  • On the "Coming Soon from CBS/Fox Video Sports and NBA Entertainment," "Home Video Preview," and "Theatrical Preview" clip-ons, the bumper is silent.
  • Sometimes, the announcer uses a slightly different tone. There are a total of 4 tones which the announcer says it. A few tones use the same as the previous bumper like the VHS of The Abyss.
  • On tapes in the Go West Collection, the text on the "CHECK FOR TITLE AVAILABILITY..." screen is said in a different tone.
  • Sometimes the announcer says "And now our feature presentation" in a slightly different tone.
  • On "The Simpsons' Short" clip-on, the announcer says "The following Simpsons short is provided for your enjoyment".
  • On the "Sneak Preview" clip-on, the announcer says "And now, for a sneak preview of [FILM TITLE]." The announcer often says the title in a deeper tone than the preceding statement. However, on the Bad Dreams and Big variant, this bumper is silent.

Availability: Common, as it was used for nearly 17 years of its existence, and it was one of the longest-lasting bumpers of all time, as it was seen on virtually most of the CBS/Fox/Fox Video/20th Century Fox Home Entertainment tapes from 1988 to 2005.

  • The "Theatrical Preview" version can be seen on the majority of Fox tapes from 1988-98, such as Vital Signs, Rapid Fire, Predator 2, Young Guns II, Hot Shots!, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie, Airheads, and Speed, and well as at the end of the Laserdisc of Independence Day.
  • The "Home Video Preview" version can be seen on the 1990-91 VHS releases of The Abyss and Pacific Heights.
  • The "Feature Presentation" version was only used until the 1993 VHS release of Rapid Fire, though it reappeared on a 2004 VHS reissue of The Desert Rats, which utilized the original FoxVideo master.
  • The original version with the Lydian font can be seen only on the CBS/Fox Video VHS releases that have the "Check for Title Availability Wherever Videos Are Sold" screen, such as the 1990-91 releases of Die Hard, The King and I, Patton, Licence to Kill, the Star Wars Trilogy, Garfield Goes Hollywood, and Oklahoma. The last tapes that used it were the 1992 VHS releases of A Garfield Christmas and the Star Wars Trilogy (Star Wars, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and From Star Wars to Jedi).
  • The last tape to use the original "HOME VIDEO PREVIEW" bumper in general is the 1999 VHS of Ever After: A Cinderella Story.
  • The first tape to feature any of the non-Widescreen Series clip-ons with the lowercase font was The Siege, and the last to have them was Me, Myself & Irene.
  • The 2001 variant made its debut on Woman on Top, following a preview for Bedazzled. The first tape to feature its standard variant before trailers was Men of Honor, and this ident in general was last used on the 2005 VHS of Roll Bounce, which is also the final TCFHE VHS ever released.

Editor's Note: This is the longest-running bumper Fox had ever used, surpassing even those used by Disney and New Line. By the time this bumper was retired, only the "COMING SOON TO THEATERS" and "NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD & VIDEO" clip-ons were used. Bizarrely, on the second-last tape with this ident (Rebound), a promo for Roll Bounce followed the latter clip-on (complete with a "COMING SOON TO VIDEO & DVD" end tag), despite it not being released until the next week.

2000[]

Powerrangersin3dfp

Bumper: We fade in on a space background. The metallic text "FEATURE PRESENTATION" (with a slight blue tint on the bottom) quickly zooms in, and light shines off it.

FX/SFX: The text zooming in and shining.

Music/Sounds: A five-note horn fanfare, with a clanking sound on the fifth note, followed by a seven-note drumbeat.

Availability: Only seen on the 2000 VHS of Power Rangers in 3-D: Power Rangers Triple Force.

May 12, 2020-present[]

Bumper: Same as the Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment bumper, but only the "Coming Soon to THEATERS" clip-on is used.

Variants: At both ends of the previews, the "Stay tuned for exciting Previews..." and "All films and promotions may not be available in all territories" screens are used.

FX/SFX: The shimmering.

Music/Sounds: Same as the current Disney bumper. None for the "Stay tuned for exciting Previews..." and "All films and promotions may not be available in all territories" screens.

Availability: Current. The main bumper was only seen on The Call of the Wild (2020), while the other variants are used more often, such as on The Night House. Most 20th Century Studios releases have no previews.

Europe/Oceania[]

United Kingdom[]

1983–1984[]

Nicknames: "Time In", "CBS/Fox Video presents... Time In", "Movies in a box from CBS/Fox"

Bumper: On a black background, we see several rectangular white boxes zoom in until they take up most of the screen. A green light can be seen in the centre of the box "tunnel". We then fade to the second half of the 1983 CBS/Fox Video animate. When it finishes, the red words in an Arial font, "TIME IN" zoom up and settle in the middle of the CBS/Fox logo. Eleven pink diagonal lines then draw in, in front of the CBS/Fox logo, but behind "TIME IN". We then cut to various clips of the five movies being advertised, in the middle of a grey background with coloured lines changing colour per film. We then cut to the last half of the CBS/Fox logo animating again, before going into the first trailer.

Variants:

  • The closing of the featurette just features the beginning from "TIME IN" zooming up, and the lines drawing.
  • On The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the clips are not described, and it skips to the first trailer.
  • A rare version exists on some trailer tapes from the time, where the box tunnel animation plays at a later point. Then, instead of "TIME IN" zooming up, the red words, "THE HIT LIST" in a Typewriter font enter through same animation as "TIME IN".
    • At the end of the tape, we fade from a more blurred version of the CBS/Fox Video logo. Then, as it comes into focus, "THE HIT LIST" zooms up during the logo's animation.

FX/SFX: As well as the logo's animation, the rest is pretty much all Scanimate.

Music/Sounds: A couple of synth drumbeats as the boxes zoom in play. When the CBS/Fox logo animates, the music segues into a downbeat synth score with a male announcer saying, "Hello, and welcome to another great movie from CBS/Fox. And to Time In, where we tell you about five other great movies you won't want to miss." He then describes the five films being advertised, which varies by tape. After this, he says, "Movies in a box, from CBS/Fox." At the end of the featurette, the last bars of the synth tune play, with the announcer saying, "And now, on with the show."

Music/Sounds Variant: For the Hit List variant, the same music plays in the background, with a different announcer per volume.

  • Volume 2: The same announcer as the normal variant says, only with more enthusiasm than normal, "Hello, and welcome to Hit List 2, the second edition of the CBS/Fox special preview tape. This time, we have seventeen new titles which cover the whole spectrum of entertainment." Before the first trailer, and after the last one, he says, albeit slightly differently, "Go for the name you know; Movies in a box from CBS/Fox!"
  • Volume 3: The same announcer as before says, "Hello. You're watching Hit List 3, the third edition of the CBS/Fox special preview tape. To start off the new year, we have thirteen great new titles. So, let's take it from the top." Before the first trailer, he says, "Movies in a box from CBS/Fox," and after the last one, he adds, "Go for the name you know," before the slogan.
  • Volume 4: A different announcer with an American accent says, "CBS/Fox welcomes you to the latest edition of the Hit List, and to a great new range of titles for the Spring." Before the first trailer, he says "All-new releases from CBS/Fox!", and finally, after the last trailer, he says, "Go for the name you know; Movies in a box from CBS/Fox."

Availability: Rare. Seen on a few pre-cert UK VHS tapes from CBS/Fox Video, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Verdict, The Empire Strikes Back, Table for Five, and Porky's II.

June 14, 1989–July 7, 1994[]

Bumper: On a black background, we see the text "COMING TO A CINEMA NEAR YOU."

Variants:

  • On rare occasions, the text is in a different font.
  • Depending on the tape, the text may end with "SOON," have multiple periods at the end, or even be arranged differently.
  • An early version has the text in a yellow color, lowercase, and italicized, against a blue background. This version appears on Die Hard.
  • A special "now available" variant appears on Keeper of the City, where the text is presented like the above variant, but in all caps and against the normal black background. It reads:

"THIS IS MY LIFE
IS AVAILABLE
FROM FOXVIDEO"

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Uncommon. This can be seen on UK rental releases such as those of Point Break, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Predator 2, Alien 3, Pacific Heights, Rapid Fire, Nuns on the Run, Desperate Hours, Come See the Paradise, and Sleeping with the Enemy, appearing before trailers for theatrical releases.

January 26, 1994[]

Bumper: On a white background, we see a close-up of Wesley Snipes, co-star of Rising Sun, saying "Hi, I'm Wesley Snipes. Thank you for renting Rising Sun. Sit back and enjoy."

FX/SFX: Live-action.

Music/Sounds: Snipes saying his line.

Availability: Appears on the 1994 UK rental VHS of Rising Sun.

July 14, 1994–March 5, 2000[]

Bumper: We start off with a white flash, which zooms out to reveal 4 gold/white filmstrips rotating on a dark gray background. Then, "VIDEO", "RELEASES", "TO", and "RENT" in a red Helvetica font also zoom into the bottom. Once the words have finished zooming, a gold light zooms into the camera that turns into a splash of light, which fades onto a dark grey background with a gold TV set and inside the set are

"VIDEO",
"RELEASES",
"TO" and "RENT"

floating. Then, the bordered circle zooms out transitioning to black.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, "RENT" is replaced with "BUY," the words are in green, and the bordered circle zooms in transitioning to black.
  • A variant exists for promoting theatrical releases, with the words in blue, reading "CINEMA", "RELEASES", "COMING", and "SOON". The TV set is replaced with filmstrips.

FX/SFX: Mid-decade CGI.

Music/Sounds: A dramatic synth like action theme, complete with whooshes once the words zoom in, which ends with a deep THX like chord and more whooshes.

Availability: Seen on 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, later Guild Home Video and Pathé releases in the UK, such as James and the Giant Peach, The Blair Witch Project, Speed 2: Cruise Control, The X Files: One Son and the rental edition of The Fifth Element.

1999–2011[]

Bumper: We see the 1999 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment logo animating as normal, but "HOME ENTERTAINMENT" blurs and fades away, and one of the following clip-ons folds in where "HOME ENTERTAINMENT" used to be.

Clip-ons:

  • COMING TO VIDEO
  • NOW ON VIDEO
  • AVAILABLE ON VIDEO (Mostly exclusive to VCDs)
  • COMING TO CINEMAS
  • COMING TO THEATRES (This can be found on a 2002 VCD of Behind Enemy Lines, and translated into Japanese on a 2006 Japanese VHS of Garfield 2: A Tale of Two Kitties)
  • FEATURE PRESENTATION
  • COMING SOON TO CINEMAS, CHECK NEWSPAPERS FOR DETAILS
  • www.fox.de (This can be found on the 2002 German VHS of Ice Age)

Variants:

  • On international releases, the already formed 20th Century Fox logo appears half transparent at the sides, and the clip-on folds in as normal. For countries where English isn't the primary language, the language varies depending on the country the tape was released in (though on Japanese tapes, a Japanese translation of the text appears underneath the standard text on the "FEATURE PRESENTATION" variant, and South Korean tapes instead use English text).
  • On the "COMING SOON TO CINEMAS, CHECK NEWSPAPERS FOR DETAILS" clip-on, the Fox structure is removed and the text appears in its place.
  • On French tapes and the 2002 German VHS of Ice Age, the "Feature Presentation" variant is just the final few seconds of the regular logo.

FX/SFX: The logo animating and the clip-ons folding in.

Music/Sounds: The 1994 20th Century Fox fanfare, and an announcer saying one of the following:

  • "Coming to video for your home viewing pleasure."
  • "Now on video for your home viewing pleasure."
  • "Available on video for your home viewing pleasure."
  • "Look for these exciting films, coming soon to cinemas."
  • "Look for these exciting films, coming soon to theatres."
  • "And now, our feature presentation."

Music/Sounds Variant: For the international variant, the bumper is silent except for a different announcer saying the clip-ons (for example, Australian releases have Hal Douglas doing the voiceovers), although in non-English-speaking countries (except for South Korea and Japan), the language varies depending on the country.

Availability: Seen on many 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Pathé, and Fox Pathé Home Entertainment VHS releases in the UK and other countries, such as Lake Placid, Sleepy Hollow, The Beach, and The World is Not Enough, and releases in various other countries such as Entrapment. Though this bumper was mostly retired in 2001, it was still used on French, Korean, and Japanese videocassettes into the late 2000s, and the "Available on Video" clip-on continued to be used on VCDs into 2011. Examples include the 2005-07 VCDs of Die Hard With a Vengeance, That Thing You Do!, and Apocalypto (released by Touchstone Pictures in the US/Canada).

2001–2005[]

Bumper: On a blue-orange diagonal gradient background, we see one of the following clip-ons in a gold font.

Clip-ons:

  • COMING SOON TO CINEMA
  • COMING SOON TO CINEMAS

Opening to My Bodyguard 1983 VHS (Australia)-2

Bumper: We start on a plain dark blue CBS/Fox logo upon a white background. It then cuts to multiple boxes zooming out on a black background, until a box with the CBS/Fox logo animation zooms in towards the viewer, surrounded by 90-degree angles. One at a time, clips from eight unidentified movies take up the screen and respectively zoom out towards the upper left, lower right, upper middle, lower middle, upper right, lower left, middle right, and middle left sides of the screen, while the first CBS/Fox logo continues to animate in the center of the screen. Once the last clip is settled, the CBS/Fox logo does six flips towards the screen whilst zooming in, all while the background fades to white, before it settles in the center.

FX/SFX: Live-action in the movie clips, animation for the logo.

Music/Sounds: A disco tune.

Availability: Extremely rare. It can be found on the 1983 Australian VHS of My Bodyguard, one of the first CBS/Fox tapes to feature previews.

1983-1992[]

'Previews' Bumper: On a black-pink gradient background, a purple rectangle border rotates and zooms in with the 1984 CBS/Fox Video logo zooming in inside it. We then cut to a space background, with a rotating purple-pink orbit and with a square with a green border, turning turquoise, then orange to the right. Nine squares of the four trailers being advertised appear, then zoom back via scanimation, to the rear of the 'tunnel'. In order, they appear in the top left, middle bottom, far right, bottom left, top right, far left, bottom right, middle top and centre, before cutting to the next movie being advertised, and so on. After the final trailer, we cut back to the black-pink background, complete with purple border, where the white Arial text, "PREVIEWS OF OTHER GREAT MOVIES FROM THE CBS/FOX VIDEO COLLECTION" zooms in.

'Keep Watching' Bumper: On the space background, over where the movies being advertised are appearing, and zooming back, the blue text, in a Helvetica Condensed font types in, "KEEP WATCHING AFTER THIS FEATURE FOR MORE PREVIEWS OF MOVIES FROM THE CBS/FOX VIDEO COLLECTION".

FX/SFX: The zooming in of the CBS/Fox Video and ID, the rotation of the space background, the clips appearing and zooming back. For the 'Previews' ID, it's the ID zooming in, whereas the text being typed in for the 'Keep Watching' ID.

Music/Sounds: The 'Previews' ID has a dark-sounding synth tune. The 'Keep Watching' ID only has a male announcer read the text.

Availability: Both 'Previews' and 'Keep Watching' IDs from 1983-85 appear on the Australian releases of Borderline and Pieces. The original 'Previews' ID from 1983 can be found on the Australian releases of Author! Author!, Porky's and Table for Five. The 'Keep Watching' ID from 1985-92 appears on Bachelor Party, The Toughest Man in the World, Romancing the Stone, and Blue Velvet, as well as other releases in Australia.

1983–September 29, 1991[]

Nicknames: "Retro Bumper," "The City," "The Giant 'PREVIEWS' Word"

Bumper: On a black background, we see a blue mirrored, stair-like texture which zooms out and rotates to face us. The word "PREVIEWS" is revealed as it zooms back to a comfortable distance over a city which moves in from the right. A few searchlights shine from the city, causing "PREVIEWS" to shine a bit.

Variants:

  • A short variant starts with the word already formed.
  • For Stay Tuned variant, the pink words "MORE TO COME" zoom out through Scanimation and settle underneath "PREVIEWS".

FX/SFX: The word, "PREVIEWS" zooming out and shining, the city rotating into view, and the searchlights. All retro 80's animation.

Music/Sounds: A short synth score, followed by a male announcer saying:

  • CBS/FOX Video Stay Tuned: "Keep watching after this feature for more previews from the CBS/FOX Video collection."
  • CBS/FOX Video Previews: "And now, more previews from the CBS/FOX Video collection."
  • Medusa Communications Stay Tuned: "Keep watching after this feature for more previews from the Medusa home video collection."
  • Medusa Communications Previews: "And now, more previews from the Medusa home video collection."

Availability: Seen on Australian CBS/Fox releases such as The Star Chamber, and The Toughest Man in the World, but possibly on other tapes from the time as well, including those from Medusa Communications. Strangely, during the post-movie previews on the 1985-87 Australian VHS editions of Romancing the Stone and Blue Velvet, the bumper doesn't appear. It also isn't seen at all on the 1986 Australian VHS of Enemy Mine.
