North America

July 3, 1985-June 5, 1986

Bumper: On a background of multiple stripes (from top to bottom: yellow, thin blue, black space, yellow, blue, thin white, thick red), we see the large word "ALSO" in a thick red font, with the word "AVAILABLE" in an italicized, formal font, underlined in red. The white line is gapped on the right by the word "FROM", in the same font; the same space has a small black line drawn in the thick red stripe at the bottom. At the end, it either quickly "page turns" to reveal the RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video logo or it cuts to the same logo rendered in silver.

Variant: On the 1985 VHS of The Slugger's Wife, another screen appears before the one described above, featuring a tilted black and white striped background, and then we see blue, yellow and red boxes with a framing border and a black box, with the word "MORE" in red, and yellow lines above and below the word. Below that is the words "NEIL SIMON COMEDY". Then it crossfades to the screen.

FX/SFX: The "page flip" or none.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Scarce. This is only known to have appeared on circa 1985-86 rental prints of Ghostbusters (sale copies have no previews) as well as The Slugger's Wife, Jagged Edge, Runaway, and Real Genius.

July 2, 1986-October 15, 1987

Bumper: On a black background, we see the text:

  • ALSO AVAILABLE FROM
  • COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU
  • COMING THIS SUMMER TO A THEATER NEAR YOU

Variants:

  • On Quiet Cool, the screen flips in from the RCA/Columbia Cube logo, before segueing into a trailer.
  • On 84 Charing Cross Road, the text is in a different font, and the bumper fades in and out.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Extremely rare, given that it only appeared on two titles.

October 5, 1989–February 14, 1990

Bumper: On a magenta background, one of these would be on the screen:

  • COMING SOON ON VIDEOCASSETTE
  • COMING SOON TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU (here, the text is in a different font with a drop shadow and the background is gradient.)

Variants:

  • On The Karate Kid Part III and Troop Beverly Hills, no drop shadow is used.
  • An alternate version exists where it has a pink-blue-black gradient background and the text is in Helvetica. In addition, on the second clip-on, "THEATRE" is spelled as "THEATER." This was only used on Relentless.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Ultra rare. This appears on RCA/Columbia tapes of the time, including Out of the Dark (the first tape to use this bumper), Chances Are, Fright Night Part 2, 976-Evil, Lawrence of Arabia, No Holds Barred, Winter People, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, and Loverboy.

February 14, 1990–September 15, 1993

Sneak Preview

Nickname: "The Filmstrip"

Bumper: On a blue gradient background, a silver filmstrip with black pictures with the yellow words "Sneak Preview", stacked on top of each other, flies in from the right. The screen then focuses on the strip as it moves until it stops, with the beginning of the trailer in place of one of the frames with "Sneak Preview". The trailer then zooms in from the filmstrip, filling the whole screen.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the trailer will play during the animation. Other times it doesn't start until the screen zooms in the preview.
  • On Leather Jackets, a special screen instead zooms in, which features a marble background and "Please Stay Tuned For These Upcoming World Premiere Videos" over it.

FX/SFX: The filmstrip flying in, made with circa-1990 computer animation.

Music/Sounds: A low synthesized note that plays for the duration of the bumper. There is also a male announcer that says one of the following:

  • Theatrical releases: "And now, a special sneak preview of movies coming to a theater near you."
  • Home video releases: "And now, a sneak preview of upcoming videocassette releases."

Availability: Uncommon, though this is easier to find than the previous three bumpers, owing to its longer period of use. It can be found on RCA/Columbia and Columbia TriStar releases of the era, such as Bloodhounds of Broadway, Immediate Family, Casualties of War, Pump Up the Volume, My Girl, Loose Cannons, One False Move, Hudson Hawk, Men at Work, Curse IV: The Ultimate Sacrifice, Arena (1989), Fast Getaway, Too Much Sun, Night of the Living Dead (1990), City of Joy, and Single White Female. Also seen on the original releases of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Sniper, A Few Good Men, Hexed and Groundhog Day (some of the few CTHV releases to have this and the third CTHV logo). The last tape to use it was Full Contact.

Editor's Note: Curiously, some tapes would only have one trailer despite the pluralization in the announcement.

1992

Bumper: Just a black screen with the words "Coming Soon from Columbia Tri-Star Home Video" or "Now Available from Columbia Tri-Star Home Video".

Variant: A variant of the "Coming Soon" clip-on with a different font for the text, and with "Tri-Star" shown as "TriStar," exists.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Far less common than its New Line equivalent of the era, but can be seen on some New Line Home Video releases such as Late for Dinner.

September 8, 1993–April 3, 2001

Bumper: The then-current Columbia TriStar Home Video (or Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment) logo animates as normal, but then when it finishes, the boxes slide away, the CTHV (or CTHE) text fades out, and one of the following phrases zooms in from the center of the screen:

  • Coming Soon to a Theater Near You
  • Now Playing in Theaters... Coming Soon to Home Video (1997-2001 only)
  • Coming Soon to Home Video
  • Now Available on Home Video (1996-97 and 1997-2001)
  • Now Available (1997-2001 only)

Main variants:

  • From 1993-96, it uses the 1993-2001 Columbia TriStar Home Video logo animation, but as the boxes slide away and the CTHV text fade out, the blue-black gradient background fades to the moving clouds as the clip-on text appears in a gold Bank Gothic font.
  • From 1996-97, it uses the 1996-97 Columbia TriStar Home Video logo animation, and the text appeared in a metallic gold Shelley Script font as the boxes slide away.
  • From 1997-2001, it uses the 1997-2001 Columbia TriStar Home Video (or Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment) logo animation, and the text appears in a black Shelley Script font as the boxes slide away.

Variants:

  • During previews from 1993-96, the Columbia TriStar Home Video logo appears already formed and the "COMING SOON TO HOME VIDEO" clip-on goes on as normal.
  • During previews from 1996-97, the bumper is shortened to the clip-on zooming in.
  • During previews from 1997-01, the Columbia TriStar Home Video (or CTHE) logo appears already formed and the clip-on goes on as normal.
  • On rare occasions, the phrases on the 1997-2001 bumper are in a bolder version of Shelley Script. The clip-ons also zoom in slowly. This has been used with the "Now Playing in Theaters... Coming Soon to Home Video" (here, the first part of the clip-on fades out to make room for the second part) and "Now Available" clip-ons.
  • On 1997-98 releases with the 1997 variant, such as Booty Call, The Fifth Element, and U-Turn, as well as the original VHS release of Baby Geniuses, the full logo plays before the first clip-on zooms in. Later tapes would just start with the fully-formed logo.

FX/SFX: The animation of the logos, the boxes sliding away, the text zooming in.

Music/Sounds/Voiceover:

  • September 8, 1993–April 23, 1996: A re-orchestrated version of the original logo's fanfare and a male announcer saying the clip-on. The announcer is the same as the one used in Trimark and Lionsgate's bumpers.
  • April 30, 1996–July 15, 1997: The same fanfare from the 1996 logo, with a brief string theme during the clip-on's screen-time, and a male announcer (likely Tony Clarkin) saying the clip-on.
  • July 22, 1997–April 3, 2001: None.

Music/Sounds/Voiceover Variants:

  • During the previews from 1993-96, a sped-up and shortened version of the fanfare from the 1993 logo is heard.
  • During the previews from 1996-97, the string theme that follows the fanfare from the 1996 logo on the opening variant is heard.
  • A silent variant of the 1996-97 bumper can be found on the 1997 demo VHS of The Devil's Own.

Availability: Extremely common, as the total number of bumpers lasted 8 years.

  • The first version debuted on Columbia TriStar Home Video VHS releases, such as El Mariachi, Fathers & Sons, Weekend at Bernie's II, In the Line of Fire, Cliffhanger, Sleepless in Seattle, Lost in Yonkers, The Pickle, Mixed Nuts, Last Action Hero, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Poetic Justice, Needful Things, Blankman, Jury Duty, The Baby-Sitters Club, and Mute Witness, among others. The last VHS tapes to use the first version of the bumper were To Die For and the demo VHS of Jumanji (the latter of which presents the clip-ons in reverse order). Strangely, although a preview for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is used on the 1994 VHS of Brainscan, no bumpers are used on the tape at all! (Even stranger, its Laserdisc counterpart has them.)
  • The second version debuted on Money Train and last appeared on the original release of Fools Rush In (a later print featured the third version).
  • The third version debuted on The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli & Baloo, and was last seen on Circus, which was released under the Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment name and uses their logo as well.

Editor's Note: These bumpers are part of a series of bumpers that would merely replay the logo they're based off of before revealing the clip-on (except during the previews), with the 1993-1996 bumper being the first bumper in the bunch. While the actual logos on their own are highly regarded, not being a bit more original when it comes to the clip-ons themselves feels lazy.

1995-1997

Bumper: On a colored background, we see the VHS cover or the film's logo. On the right, we see the text asking viewers to now available or coming soon via a price collected to order wherever videos are sold.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None or the end of the trailer's music with a voiceover announcing the text.

Availability: Seen at the end of trailers of releases by Columbia TriStar Home Video.

1997-98

Bumper: TBA.

Trivia: This bumper is also a trailer for DVDs, with clips from titles released on DVD by CTHV at the time.

Variant: A widescreen version, surrounded by two blue Columbia Tristar Home Video logo borders, exists.

FX/SFX: TBA.

Music/Sounds: Narrated by Don Lafontaine.

Availability: Rare. Seen at the start of early DVDs and some VHSs from CTHV.

December 1999

Bumper: TBA

FX/SFX: Live-action.

Music/Sounds: TBA

Availability: Seen only on the 1999 VHS of The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, in between the Surround Sound logo and the modified screen.

April 24, 2001–June 14, 2005

Bumper: The 2001 Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment logo animates as normal. But when it is formed, one of the following clip-ons appears on top of the screen:

  • COMING SOON TO THEATERS
  • NOW PLAYING IN THEATERS
  • COMING SOON TO HOME VIDEO
  • NOW AVAILABLE ON HOME VIDEO
  • COMING SOON TO VHS & DVD
  • NOW AVAILABLE ON VHS & DVD
  • COMING SOON TO DVD
  • NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD

Trivia:

  • The "HOME VIDEO" clip-ons were officially retired with the VHS of National Security, released on May 27th, 2003, although they made one last appearance on the demo VHS of Punch-Drunk Love. Starting with the June 10th release of Tears of the Sun, the "(VHS &) DVD" clip-ons replaced them.
  • During the previews, the clip-ons are separated across both black bars, except for "COMING SOON TO THEATERS," "COMING SOON TO VHS & DVD," and "COMING SOON TO/NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD," which appear entirely on the top bar.
  • Some tapes, such as Auto Focus and Big Girls Don't Cry, only use one clip-on (over the opening logo), and therefore leave off the during-preview variant entirely. Conversely, on The Animal, A Knight's Tale, and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, the proper logo is left off and only the during-preview variant is used.
  • On demo tapes, the original trailer for the film on the tape plays, followed by the during-preview variant. The exception is the 2002 demo VHS of Drunken Master, which does not contain its own trailer, and as such only features the standard variant of the "COMING SOON TO HOME VIDEO" clip-on.

Variants:

  • During the previews, half the logo appears in letterbox, and the text appears over the bars. Here, the logo starts where the pan shot of the Torch Lady's robe covered legs and feet transitions to the pan shot of the Pegasus, and the animation is in warp speed.
  • Starting with the 2004 VHS of 50 First Dates, the logo is in widescreen, in warp speed and is shortened (starting where the pan shot of the Pegasus dissolves to the center shot of the Pegasus), and the words are set in the Gill Sans font.
  • On the 2001 VHS of Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles - The Tesca Campaign, the bumper fades in at the very end, just as the "COMING SOON TO HOME VIDEO" clip-on fades in.

FX/SFX: The same animation as in the regular logo, but with the words fading in at the end.

Music/Sounds/Voiceover: The VHS variant's music, with Greg O'Neill saying the clip-on at the end.

Music/Sounds/Voiceover Variants:

  • The 2004 variant uses the second half of the DVD fanfare.
  • At the start of the preview reel, the clicking noise that normally starts the VHS variant is absent.
  • On the during-preview variant, the VHS fanfare is shortened.

Availability: A bit less common than the regular logo. It debuted on Finding Forrester (one of the first releases with the original logo) and appears on every CTHE release with previews since, such as Ghosts of Mars, A Knight's Tale, Two Can Play That Game, The New Guy, Resident Evil, The Sweetest Thing, Spider-Man, xXx, Stealing Harvard, Half Past Dead, Basic, Big Girls Don't Cry, Radio, Something's Gotta Give, and You Got Served. The during-trailer variant is actually slightly rarer, since some tapes use only one clip-on. The 2004 variant appears on later tapes such as Tiptoes, Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius, Spider-Man 2, Little Black Book, and The Forgotten, and was last used on Hitch.

Editor's Note: Same as above.

June 28, 2005–February 21, 2006

Bumper: It's exactly the same as the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment logo, except during the cloud portion, one of these clip-ons is shown:

  • Coming Soon to Theaters
  • Now Playing in Theaters
  • Coming Soon to DVD and Video
  • Now Available on DVD and Video

FX/SFX: The original logo's animation, plus the added phrase.

Music/Sounds: The original logo's fanfare, with Nick Tate saying the onscreen phrase.

Availability: Very rare, since the logo itself was debuted very late in the lifespan of VHS, and as such this bumper was used for a short time. It can be seen on Sony's final releases on the format, starting with 7 Seconds and ending with Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild.

Editor's Note: Same as above.

RCA-Columbia-International-1984-Coming-Soon-UK-Ultrararevariant

Bumper: On a black background, a different version of the RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video logo, with the RCA logo bigger, the Columbia Pictures text and torch lady in the same colour as the RCA logo, and "Pictures" smaller than normal, rotates clockwise whilst zooming in. It settles in the centre of the screen, while the words "COMING SOON", in a very poor trail effect, zoom in above the logo. The trail slowly fades out before the bumper fades to black.

FX/SFX: The rotating and zooming in of the RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video logo, followed by "COMING SOON" zooming in with a trail effect.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Near extinction. It has only been known, so far, to appear on a trailer tape of Trailer Epics: Volume 6, which was marketed and distributed by TDK.

August 1984-1988

Bumper:

  • Coming to a cinema: On a black background is the white text "AT THE CINEMA NOW."
  • Now available: On a light blue-black gradient background, the video being advertised is shown on the left-hand side of the screen, with "Available on video from RCA/Columbia Pictures Video" to its right.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the text font and background will vary.
  • On releases from Hi-Pressure Video, we see the yellow words, "AVAILABLE FROM HI-PRESSURE VIDEO" in a Dom Casual font. Below that are the black words, "DISTRIBUTED BY" in the same font, above the RCA/Columbia International logo.
  • On the 1987 UK rental VHS of Just Between Friends, the background is white-purple gradient and there's no additional text, as the video is in the center of the screen. This follows trailers for Nothing in Common and Best Shot.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: The trailer audio.

Availability: Ultra rare. This was a rather short-lived slide, but it can be found on certain RCA/Columbia UK rental tapes from the era, such as Iron Eagle.

1988-1993

Bumper: On a black background is the silver shiny text "COMING ATTRACTIONS".

Variants:

  • On international tapes, the bumper would fade from the RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video or Columbia TriStar Home Video logo from the time.
  • Rarely, this bumper would feature which season/month of the year the forthcoming videos were being released.
  • The bumper would be translated depending on which country the tape was from. For instance, tapes from Italy have the bumper read "PROSSIMAMENTE SUL VOSTRO SCHERMO" ("Coming Soon on Your Screen").

FX/SFX: The text shining.

Music/Sounds: On UK releases, the bumper is silent, although on international releases, the tail end of the RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video logo music is heard.

Availability: Seen on RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video and Columbia TriStar Home Video releases from the 1980s and early 1990s, mainly in the UK, Australia and Italy.

1990-1992

Bumper: On a colored, or white, background, we see a cover for the video being advertised, usually slanted slightly, and around it usually appears to be the price for the retail video, along with a "now available to buy from all good video retailers" disclaimer.

Variants: A wide variety of variants exist for various film titles. Here are some examples:

  • Who's Harry Crumb? has the video on the top left of a grey-white gradient BG, with the price of "£9.99" at the top right in a Futura font and the words "THIS FILM IS NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY OR RENT FROM ALL GOOD VIDEO RETAILERS." scrolling from right to left in the same font.
  • Red Heat and Willow have the video in the center of a white BG, and the price of "£9.99" in a black font to the right of the video. The black words "Now available to buy or rent at all good video stockists." scroll from right to left in the same font.
  • The Adventures of Baron Munchausen has the video in the middle of a plain white BG, with the price of "£9.99" in a black Times font at the top right of the screen. The black words "NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY OR RENT FROM ALL GOOD VIDEO RETAILERS", in the same font, scroll from right to left.
  • See No Evil, Hear No Evil has the large video on a blue-white gradient BG. To the right of it is the price of "£9.99" in a bold white font.
  • My Stepmother Is an Alien has the video in the middle of a plain white BG. The price of "£9.99" is to the top right of it, in a black Arial font, and the following words "NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY OR RENT FROM ALL GOOD VIDEO STOCKISTS", in the same font, scroll from right to left.
  • A special variant exists for Ghostbusters II, which has its video the left of a white BG, and the black Arial text ""GHOSTBUSTERS" AND "GHOSTBUSTERS II" ON ONE TAPE! SPECIAL LIMITED EDITION ONLY £14.99". Below all this, the text in the same font and color, ""GHOSTBUSTERS" AND "GHOSTBUSTERS 2" AVAILABLE IN NOVEMBER 1990 ON THE ONE VIDEOCASSETTE FOR ONLY £14.99 ... ORDER YOUR COPY NOW WHILE STOCKS LAST!" scroll from right to left.
  • Steel Magnolias has the video on the top left on a black-pink gradient BG. The bold text "AVAILABLE TO BUY FROM ALL GOOD VIDEO RETAILERS FROM 30th SEPTEMBER 1991" scrolls from right to left, whilst the text "RESERVE YOUR COPY NOW!" fades in on the right of the video in the same font. However, when the slide appeared on Awakenings, all text is the same as on the below-mentioned slide.
  • Glory features the video on a dark-light red gradient BG, with the white Futura words "ON SALE NOW RRP £10.99" to the left of the video, and the words "FROM ALL GOOD VIDEO RETAILERS" below that. Another version of the screen features the video in the middle of a plain white screen, with the red text below reading "AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL FROM SEPTEMBER 14".
  • The Kiss, Revenge and Hellbound: Hellraiser II have the video on the left of a still from the film, tinted red, with the words "R.R.P. £10.99" in a bold, white Futura font next to the video. The words "NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY FROM ALL GOOD VIDEO RETAILERS" scroll below the video from right to left, but slowly fade out before it completely scrolls past.
  • Look Who's Talking has the video on the left side of a black-blue gradient BG, with the white Futura text "r.r.p. £12.99" on the right side. "AVAILABLE TO BUY FROM ALL GOOD VIDEO RETAILERS" scrolls in from right to left. Another version of the screen replaces the text on the right with "ON SALE NOW".

FX/SFX: The "NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY" text scrolling.

Music/Sounds: Usually, none, but rarely, the trailer's opening audio will play as this bumper fades out.

Availability: Seen on many retail and rental tapes in the UK from 20/20 Vision and RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video.

  • On the rental tape of The Freshman, we see the above text in a more Times-like font, featured on a light blue-light purple-white gradient background. It then fades out, and we see a slide for the first film being advertised.
  • On the 1991 releases of Flatliners and Side-Out, the text is in a Palatino font.
  • On some 20/20 Vision rental tapes from 1991-92, such as Hudson Hawk, Creepers, Drop Dead Fred, and Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael, the text is in a Futura font on a black-purple, or dark blue-black gradient background.

  • On the 1992 UK VHS of Bugsy, just before a trailer for Single White Female, the text is shown behind a shot of a few newspaper roommate listings.
  • On the 1993 VHS of Groundhog Day, the text is in a Futura font on a black-purple gradient background.
  • On the 1994 VHS of Look Who's Talking Now!, the text is on a lighter black-purple background, and the text has a white light shining within them. A light rotates a few times around the words.
  • On the 1994-95 releases of The Man With 3 Arms and Blue Sky, it scrolls from right to left in the middle of trailers of A Few Good Men and Geronimo: An American Legend, similar to the 1995 Polygram Video UK Stay Tuned bumper on the VHS release of Shallow Grave.
  • On the 1995 VHS of Little Big League, the background is black and the text is white.

FX/SFX: None or the action moving.

Music/Sounds: None.

Music/Sounds Variant: On some early CTHV UK retail tapes, the "For You to Own" bumper, the very end of the music from the 20/20 Vision logo can be briefly heard. The "Coming Soon" version has a gong sound, similar to the Rank Organisation logo.

Availability: Seen on later RCA/Columbia and early CTHV releases from the UK from the era.

April 15, 1991

RCA-Columbia-Intl-Rare-Sneak-Preview-ID

Bumper: On a black space background with blue, white and orange stars zooming in, and moving rapidly from right to left, we see the print logo of the 1988 RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video logo zoom in via a trail effect - only the words, "INTERNATIONAL VIDEO" are replaced by "VIDEO UK" - and stop in the centre. The logo stays on-screen for a few seconds before exiting via the bottom-left of the screen in the same trail effect, leaving the space bg. The screen then flips to the right, revealing a bright yellow-white gradient background, where four CGI 35mm movie projector sprockets move in, two in front of the other two. After rotating into position, some red 35mm moves in, the film reel moving about the sprockets, causing them to rotate. During this, a white rectangle with a window moves in from the top, positioning itself in front of the film reel. Wiping from the right, the full 1988 RCA/Columbia Pictures International Video logo plays. When the animation finishes, the reel animation stops, and the logo zooms in to fill the screen. The light blue words, "SNEAK PREVIEW" rotate around the box, and position themselves in front of the Columbia Pictures portion of the logo.

FX/SFX: Just about everything, from the logos to the space background and CGI sprockets & film reel.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Scarce. It has only been, so far, spotted on the 1991 Touchstone Home Video rental VHS of Ernest Goes to Jail.

Editor's Note: After the "SNEAK PREVIEW" animation is complete, some of the sprocket & film reel animation can still be seen on the left of the screen.

  • On First Release's tapes from 1994-99, the FRHE text flips to the word "Coming Soon" in blue.
  • On Video Box Office's tapes from 1988-96, after the VBO logo finishes, the clapperboard claps again to change the VBO text into the chrome words "COMING SOON".
  • On Video Box Office's tapes from 1997-99, "Coming Soon" slides in letter-by-letter directly below the VBO logo.
  • On Triumph Home Video's tapes from around 1992-96, after the Triumph logo plays, two blue lines appear and the blue words "COMING SOON" folds in letter-by-letter in a blue Gil Sans font.
