May 1, 1975 - April? 1978 Edit

PG

Bumper: On a black background, we see a red and blue arc with the rating (in 3-D and in blue with white outlines) inside of it.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: A narrarator (Richard St. James?) saying the movie's rating. For R-rated features, an explanation of the rating was used.

Availability: Same as the previous bumper.

Scare Factor: None.

April? 1978 - Late 1982 Edit

PG (1980)

Bumper: On a black background, we see the film's rating in blue. Underneath it, "The following has been rated ___ by the Motion Picture Association of America." scrolls up, and for PG-and R-rated features, an explanation of the rating follows.

Variant: For the first few months of its existence, there was no explanation of the PG rating and the R rating is explained differently.

FX/SFX: The scrolling.

Music/Sounds: Same as last bumper, except now the PG rating gets explained.

Availability: Same as the previous bumpers. The early version of the R rating bumper turned up on an April 25, 1978 airing of Nightcomers and the early version of the PG rating bumper turned up on a May 2, 1978 airing of The Bad News Bears.

Scare Factor: None to low. The black background and voiceover can get to some.

Late 1982 - 1984 Edit

PG (1983)

Bumper: On a black-blue gradient background, the film's rating is seen in reddish-orange on the top left corner, and the text is already there.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: Same as the previous bumper (but this time the voiceover alternates between a man and a woman), but a little more descriptive.

Availability: Same as the previous bumpers.

Scare Factor: None.

1984/5 - 1987 Edit

HBO rated R

Bumper: On a similar background to the previous bumper (except with HBO logos all over), the usual rating information appears.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: Same as the last bumper, sans the male voiceover.

Available: Same as the other bumpers.

Scare Factor: None.

1987 - 1989 Edit

HBO PG-13

Bumper: On a black-purple-black gradient background of HBO logos, we see the typical rating information.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: Same as the previous bumper. This was also the last bumper to provide an explanation of the R rating.

Available: Same as the previous bumpers.

Scare Factor: None.

1989 - March 1994 Edit

HBO rated R 1989

Bumper: Over a purple marble background, we see the movie's rating, and next to it is a white marble section with a disclaimer, "Closed Captioning" and "In Stereo Where Available" icons, and the HBO logo.

Variant: Sometimes, "En Español" and "In Stereo and Surround Sound Where Available" icons are used.

FX/SFX: None.

Cheesy Factor: The bumper is rather ugly.

Music/Sounds: Same as the previous bumpers, but for the first time in HBO history, it was just "The following movie is rated [insert rating]." Though sometimes if unrated programming was being aired, it would be a warning about the program's intensity or frankness. NC-17 movies had the bumper as well, as proven by a 1992 airing of Dice Rules.

Availability: Same as the previous bumpers.

Scare Factor: None, but seeing as this is the last bumper with Richard St. James providing the voiceover, it gets creepier with the following bumpers.

March - Summer 1994 Edit

HBO rated R 1994
The following program contains

What the program contains. This was one of the many things HBO did in response to Clinton's threats against programming that was deemed too inappropriate for children.

Bumper: Same as the previous bumper, but enhanced and, as a result of President Bill Clinton's 1993 lesiglation against the ever-increasing levels of explicit content on television, there's now a second screen depicting what the program contains.

Variant: For TV shows and specials, it just showed whether the program was in mono or stereo, if a Spanish audio track was available, and then it went into the second screen.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: Same as the last bumper, except it happens as soon as the bumper fades in and a new narrator is used. None for the TV show/special variant.

Availability: Same as the other bumpers, though aside from the first few, this is the hardest to come across.

Scare Factor: Low to medium, mainly due to the voiceover.

Note: Many of the categories that were used here (such as "Adult humor") were eventually discontinued by the next bumper's debut.

Summer 1994 - 1997 Edit

HBO rated R 1994 - 1995

Bumper: We see a man holding a clapboard, tinted in purple. The usual rating information appears over tt.

Variant: Starting in 1996 or 1997, after President Clinton enacted the V-Chip act, bumpers for TV ratings were added.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: Same as the previous bumper.

Availability: Same as the previous bumpers.

Scare Factor: Low to medium.

Fall 1997 - Fall 1999 Edit

HBO rated R 1997

Bumper: Over a watery background, the bumper design is the same as before, only this time the text is white, the rating information is in a near-rectangle, the rating is bigger and bolder, and the rating is also within a dark red rectangle.

FX/SFX: The water moving.

Music/Sounds: Same as the previous two bumpers.

Availability: Same as the previous bumpers.

Scare Factor: None to low.

HBO rated R 2000

Bumper: Over a sky blue-orange valve, the usual rating info appears.

FX/SFX: The valve opening.

Music/Sounds: Same as the last few bumpers.

Availability: Same as the previous bumpers.

Scare Factor: Low.

FX/SFX: The aurora changing colors.

Music/Sounds: Same as the last bumper. On the outer networks, none.

Availability: Same as the previous bumpers.

Scare Factor: Low with the voiceover.

HBO G rating 2006

Bumper: TBA

FX/SFX: TBA
