1985 (Walt Disney Pictures)

WDHV-UK-Outstanding-Film-Cinema-Soon

Audio: None.

Availability: Rare. Seen on the original rental releases of Robin Hood, Hunting Instinct, and Tex.

Editor's Note: Not only is the text cheaply chyroned, but it is also off center.

1986–1995

Visuals: The 1986 Walt Disney Home Video logo is seen animating as normal, but as the logo is almost completed, it shifts down largely as one of the below clip-ons fades in above the logo before it shines:

  • ALSO AVAILABLE FROM
  • COMING SOON FROM

Technique: Same as the 1986 Walt Disney Home Video logo, which uses a combination of motion-controlled animation and CGI, along with 2D computer animation for the additional text.

Variants:

  • On some tapes, the bumper animates normally, but with a different voiceover. Otherwise, no voiceover is heard (see “Music/Sounds” and “Music/Sounds Variants” for more info).
  • At the end of 1994 retail releases, we see the already formed logo with the text above reading "LOOK OUT FOR FUTURE RELEASES FROM."
  • A shorter variant exists, which skips Mickey and starts with the spark writing the Walt Disney signature.
  • On early tapes, such as the 1986 rental release of Pinocchio, the words "COMING SOON FROM" in one line appears in red.
  • Some early tapes, such as Benji the Hunted, have the text in a different font.
  • On the 1988 UK and Irish VHS rental releases of Sleeping Beauty, "NOW AVAILABLE FROM", in a sans-serif font, fades in above the logo.
  • On some 1992 retail releases, like Cinderella and Basil the Great Mouse Detective (known as The Great Mouse Detective in America), the Coming Soon variant takes place on a blue background for the Sing-Along Songs trailer.
  • Starting in 1994, the Walt Disney Home Video logo (excluding Sorcerer Mickey) and the following text (which is smaller) is tinted in red.
  • Depending on the color scheme, the WDHV logo and the text may appear in magenta (pink) or red.

Audio: Same as the 1986 Walt Disney Home Video logo jingle, but the music is often high pitched, due to it being converted in the PAL format. Sometimes the music is shortened and/or in the NTSC format.

Audio Variants:

  • On the short variant and sometimes the full variant, there is no voiceover. This variant is also used as a de-facto home video logo.
  • On some 1986 retail releases, Pat Sharp concludes, "A world of magic, which can be yours to own for a lifetime, from Walt Disney Home Video."
  • On the 1987 retail releases of Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, Mary Poppins, Popeye, Herbie Goes to Monte Carol, Soccer Mania, Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day, Chip ‘n Dale Go Nuts, and Mickey’s Christmas Carol, only Brian Cummings is heard saying, “This season, you and your family can own the magic of Disney on videocassette, only from Walt Disney Home Video.” At the end of the advertisement, he states, “Don’t miss this opportunity to begin your own Disney library for only $12.99, and bring Disney home for good.”
  • On the 1988 retail releases of Pinocchio, The Sword in the Stone, Return to Oz, Mary Poppins, Pete’s Dragon, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Winnie the Pooh: The Great Honey Pot Robbery, Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Very Merry Christmas Songs, Mickey’s Magical World, and Mickey’s Christmas Carol, Brian Cummings says, “Now you can own the magic of Disney on video. A classic library can be yours to share forever.” At the end of the advertisement, he states, “Share the magic with your family for only £7.99. Bring Disney home for keeps.”
  • On the 1989 retail releases of Sleeping Beauty, both the logo and music play in full and, as soon as the WDHV logo begins to settle in, Brian Cummings says, “Now, you and your family can own the magic of Disney on video.” A similar version is shown on the same tape following an advertisement of other titles available on home video, which begins with a preview for Robin Hood, except Brian Cummings says, “Don‘t miss this opportunity to collect the very best of Disney. Available wherever videocassettes are sold.” throughout the short variant of the logo.
    • This version also appears on the 1989 retail releases of Robin Hood, The Sword in the Stone, Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, Disney’s Sing Along Songs: Very Merry Christmas Songs, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers: Crimebusters, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Tron, Popeye, Winnie the Pooh: The Great Honey Pot Robbery, Mickey and the Gang, Unsinkable Donald Duck, Pluto’s Tales, and Mickey’s Christmas Carol, except Cummings’ voiceover begins as soon as the WDHV logo finishes shining, leading to it ending at the beginning of a preview for Sleeping Beauty.
  • On the 1991 retail release of The Little Mermaid, Brian Cummings announces, “From Walt Disney Home Video, a world of magic that can be yours to treasure for a lifetime.”
  • At the end of 1994-95 retail releases, John Sachs (better known as the announcer from Gladiators) concludes, "Look out for future releases from Walt Disney Home Video."
  • Starting in 1994, the opening variant is accompanied with a voiceover by Sachs (e.g. "Also available from Walt Disney Home Video", or "Coming soon from Walt Disney Home Video").

Availability: Seen mostly on British and Irish Disney VHS tapes available for sale and rental from the time. The two variants, though, were seen on some tapes from the same era. This also appears on non-Disney tapes, such as the rental release of Sister Act.

1986–1993 (Touchstone Home Video)

Visuals: Same as the 1986-87 Touchstone Home Video logo, but the words "COMING SOON FROM" are seen above the logo.

Variants:

  • On rental tapes announcing retail releases, "LOOK OUT FOR THESE OTHER MOVIES FROM" would be in place of the "COMING SOON FROM" text.
  • On some early tapes, "COMING SOON FROM" fades out as the lightning appears on the circle.
  • On the 1993 retail release of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, "ALSO AVAILABLE" replaces "COMING SOON."
  • An extremely rare variant has no text at all above the logo. This variant also appears as a de-facto home video logo.

Technique: Same as the 1986-87 Touchstone Home Video logo, which uses CGI animation.

Audio: Same as the Touchstone Home Video logo from the time.

Audio Variant: The third variant features a male announcer saying, "Now you can own these great hits from Touchstone Home Video!" before the audio segues into the first trailer, or there isn't any music at all.

Availability: Seen on the rental and retail editions of most Touchstone VHS tapes of the time from the UK and Ireland, as well as various Disney and Hollywood Pictures rental releases of the time, such as Betsy's Wedding, Run, Stakeout, Cocktail, Blaze, White Fang, The Rocketeer, The Doctor, What About Bob?, and The Hand Rocks the Cradle. The early variant appears on the rental releases of Good Morning Vietnam, Stella, and D.O.A., while the announcer variant appears on the rental releases of Pretty Woman and Turner & Hooch (the latter has it at the end, despite there being no notice on the tape itself about more previews after the film). Although this bumper mostly appears on rental releases, some retail releases contain it as well.

1986–1987 (Walt Disney Home Video)

Visuals: On a pink-white-blue gradient background, we see the text "COMING SOON FROM" in a serif font. It flips over to reveal the Disney Premiere Cinema logo.

FX/SFX: A digital graphic with flipping effects.

Audio: A short version of the Disney Premiere Cinema logo theme.

Availability: Seen on the rental releases of Pinocchio and Sunday Drive, which, at the time, were distributed by Rank Video; therefore, it's possible it appears on other Rank-distributed Disney tapes of the time as well.

  • AVAILABLE TO BUY
  • FEATURE PRESENTATION (recycled from the 1992 North American bumper)

Variants:

  • The color scheme varies for each clip-on.
  • The "COMING SOON" clip-on is still.
  • The "AVAILABLE TO BUY" and "FEATURE PRESENTATION" clip-ons animate like the U.S./Canadian counterpart of the era.
  • The "NOW AVAILABLE" and "SOON AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEO" clip-ons animate in a similar fashion, except the texts largely zoom in during the animation. The former clip-on is shown in letterboxed format, while the latter clip-on is shown on open matte.
  • On the 1997 retail release of The English Patient, the "NOW AVAILABLE" clip-on is bold, tinted in white, and a still image. In addition, the text is arranged horizontally and most of the outlining is gone.

Technique: Some clip-ons are digital graphics with fading effects, while others use CGI animation.

Audio:

  • The "COMING SOON" and "FEATURE PRESENTATION" clip-ons, as well as the 1997 edition of the "NOW AVAILABLE" clip-on, contain a majestic horn & string-driven fanfare - possibly an alternate take of the 1991 WDHV logo theme. To make room for the music, these clip-ons stay on screen for three additional seconds. This music was first heard on Aspen Extreme.
  • Both the "SOON AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEO" clip-on and the 1998 edition of the "NOW AVAILABLE" clip-on use the 1991 WDHV logo jingle.

  • On the 1993-94 rental releases of 3 Ninjas and Born Yesterday and the 2003 retail releases of The Magical World of Winnie the Pooh, the 1991 WDHV jingle is heard on both the "COMING SOON" and "FEATURE PRESENTATION" clip-ons.
  • On the 2000 retail releases of Spot's Show and Other Musical Adventures, the music from other international bumpers is heard on the "FEATURE PRESENTATION" clip-on.
  • On the 1996-98 rental releases of Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, Con Air, The Preacher's Wife, and The Wings of the Dove, the Jim Henson Video logo jingle is heard on the "AVAILABLE TO BUY" clip-on.
  • On the 1998 rental release of The 6th Man, the 1991 WDHV logo jingle is heard on the "AVAILABLE TO BUY" clip-on.

  • The first Disney-branded retail releases to contain the "FEATURE PRESENTATION" clip-on were Around the World with Timon and Pumbaa and Dining Out with Timon and Pumbaa from 1997, followed two years later by Toy Story: Collector’s Edition. Other retail titles with it include Toy Story 2, Tarzan, The Legend of Tarzan and Power Rangers: Wild Force videotapes, Dinosaur, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, Freaky Friday, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, and Kim Possible: The Secret Files; most of these releases also included the "COMING SOON" and "NOW AVAILABLE" clip-ons.
  • The first Disney-branded retail release to contain the "COMING SOON" clip-on was A Bug's Life from 1999.
  • Tapes with the "NOW AVAILABLE" clip-on include the rental and retail editions of Disney-branded VHS tapes from the 2000s.
  • Tapes with the "AVAILABLE TO BUY" clip-on include the rental releases of Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, Con Air, and The 6th Man.

Editor's Note: The unique jingle used in the case of most of the clip-ons can be quite loud, which might not sit well with some viewers.

1992–1996 (Jim Henson Video)

Visuals: As the Jim Henson Video logo of the era animates, "NOW AVAILABLE FROM" fades in above it in green.

  • Sometimes the logo is a little more towards the top of the screen, and as "VIDEO" fades in, "NOW AVAILABLE" or "ALSO AVAILABLE" fade in below the logo.
  • On certain VHS tapes, the 1992 Jim Henson Video logo animates as normal, but fades out earlier.
